Austrianism

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Austriazismus refers to an expression that in the in Austria widespread linguistic varieties of German is used and perceived in the rest of German-language area either as typically Austrian or is not common or incomprehensible. Austrians are a constituent element of Austrian German .

The corresponding Swiss peculiarities are called Helvetisms , those in Belgium as Belgicisms . There is no generally accepted term for the peculiarities that are restricted to Germany ; the terms “ Teutonism ”, “Germanyism” and “Federal Germanism” have been used and controversially discussed in specialist linguistic literature since the mid-1990s .

Due to cross-border media consumption (including “social media” online), many young Austrians allow themselves to be persuaded by the predominance of the High German language to perceive them as more correct. The Austrian Ministry of Education therefore started instructing school teachers in 2014 to encourage more Austrianism in order to push back “Teutonisms”. In order to keep the special vocabulary livelier in the future, for example, memory should be played in class with cards that name a large number of terms in High German, Schwyzerdütsch and Austrian German. The party game Activity , originally released in Austria by Piatnik , contains numerous Austrianism cards, so that German players often did not know what was meant without looking up.
