Christoph 51 about Stuttgart

Christoph 51 is an intensive care transport and rescue helicopter of the DRF Luftrettung deployed at the Pattonville airfield in Stuttgart .

Christoph 51 will be operational around the clock in the near future.

It will be the second 24 hour helicopter in the state of Baden-Württemberg.

history

Christoph 51 had been stationed at Stuttgart Airport since June 1989 . The helicopter had to be relocated due to the increased number of flights at the airport over the past twenty years and due to the tightened security requirements as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11th. On October 1, 2009, Christoph 51 was relocated from Stuttgart Airport to Pattonville Airport. The new station at Pattonville Airport includes a helicopter hangar, a personnel service building with an office, a kitchen, a lounge and three relaxation rooms.

Since 2005 the helicopter, which was originally used as an intensive care transport helicopter, has also been alerted as a rescue helicopter for emergency operations when it is closest to the scene. The rescue helicopter was stationed at the air rescue center at Stuttgart Airport, which was founded in 1989, until October 1, 2009. An MBB / Kawasaki BK 117 has been flown since 1993 , before that a Eurocopter BO 105 and a Bell 206 -Long Ranger were used at this location. Until the accident in 2005, the D-HBBB was the machine regularly used at the station. After that - as is usual at other locations - no master machine was used any more. Since then, the aircraft has changed more frequently for maintenance reasons or for other flight operations reasons. The Christoph 51 team has been flying a new Airbus Helicopter H145 or EC 145 since August 25, 2017 . The new helicopter has u. a. a longer range (200 kilometers more than the old helicopter, a total of 700 kilometers), is more fuel-efficient as well as a little faster and larger, it also has a built-in weather radar and a three-axis autopilot, which is why it is significantly safer.

Incidents

Accident in 2005

On September 28, 2005, Christoph 51 started at 11:03 am with a patient on board from the Gerlinger Klinik Schillerhöhe with the destination Klinikum Großhadern in Munich . In addition to the patient, the pilot, a paramedic and an emergency doctor were on board. At 11:15 a.m., the rescue helicopter collided with the Boßler on the Swabian Alb in impassable terrain near Weilheim an der Teck at a height of 794 m , after witnesses said it had touched several trees. The helicopter burned out completely. The inmates could only be rescued dead.

Investigation of the cause

The report submitted by the Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation in August 2007 came to the conclusion that the pilot was under the influence of various drugs. For this reason, he probably did not notice that he was on a collision course with the clearly visible slope. The other crew members could not notice the danger because they were busy looking after the patient. A technical defect in the helicopter was excluded.

Prosecutor's investigation

The investigating public prosecutor's office in Stuttgart stated in October 2005: "According to the results of the forensic medical examinations, it cannot be assumed that the pilot's ability to act is impaired by drugs or addictive substances." In December 2005, however, she started an investigation into negligent homicide against the doctor who had certified the pilot's fitness to fly.

Two toxicological reports from 2006 come to the conclusion "that the pilot's fitness to fly could have been impaired by medication, which can lead to fatigue".

The investigation was closed on April 3, 2007 because the cause of the accident could not be determined with certainty. Although the pilot took a drug for a period of one year that can lead to fatigue, it could not be proven that this was the cause of the accident. However, the Braunschweig Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) made clear information about the circumstances it considers likely to be the cause in its report - including the influence of medication and suspected stress symptoms.

Fire in 2009

On May 22, 2009, the helicopter burned down completely in the hangar. While checking an oxygen cylinder during the morning check of the helicopter, a flash suddenly shot out, injuring a crew member and setting the helicopter on fire.

Work accident in 2015

On the morning of March 5, 2015, Christoph 51 landed on the roof landing area of the Katharinen Hospital in Stuttgart to take in a patient for a transfer flight. A 53-year-old hospital employee got caught in the tail rotor, which was still running, and was fatally injured. The Criminal Police and the Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation started investigations and assume an accident, but were initially unable to clarify why the man was on the platform with the rotor running.
