Christoph 9 is the rescue helicopter operated by the Federal Ministry of the Interior at the Duisburg Trade Association Accident Clinic . The three-man crew flies up to 1,300 missions annually within a 50-kilometer radius of the air rescue center in the south of Duisburg, which opened on September 16, 1975. Since a Euregio cooperation in 2003, Christoph 9 has also been alerted about cross-border missions in the Netherlands . In February 2008, a new Eurocopter EC 135 T2i helicopter was put into service, replacing the twelve-year-old BO 105 .

history

Old Christoph 9 at the hangar, around 1978

As part of the construction of a nationwide air ambulance service was opened in the air rescue center Duisburg as ninth in Germany September 16, 1975, which is why the rescue helicopter to BOS - radio call "Christoph 9" received. A Bölkow Bo 105 was used as the first machine in Duisburg . In the summer of 1978, a Bell UH-1D of the Army Aviation was briefly on duty for almost a month, but it was replaced again by a BO 105 civil defense helicopter. From 1995 a modernized helicopter in the version CBS-5 of the same type flew as Christoph 9 . The new machine had improved performance data and was a. 30 centimeters longer.

On October 1, 2003, a cooperation in cross-border air rescue was concluded as part of a funded Euregio project. It was agreed that the Dutch rescue helicopter Lifeliner 3 , which is operated 24 hours a day by ANBW Medical Air Assistance (MAA), can be used in Germany. In return, Christoph 9 can be alerted to missions in the Netherlands .

After more than 30 years and almost 30,000 missions, the BO 105 was finally taken out of service and replaced by a Eurocopter EC 135  T2i.

Tasks and missions

Development of the numbers used by Christoph 9

In the original sense serve rescue helicopters to the disaster and civil defense . However, since such missions are very rare, the Federal Ministry of the Interior allows Christoph 9 to be used for air rescue . The main tasks of air rescue include the quick transport of medical helpers and the gentle transport of seriously injured or sick people to (special) clinics. The helicopter is also used to transport donor organs , rescue dogs , water rescue , surveillance flights in the event of forest fires and emergency operations on inland waterways . More than 1000 patients are cared for each year, and in 35% of all cases they are transported by helicopter.

From the opening of the air rescue center in September 1975 to the end of October 2010, Christoph 9 flew over 33,000 missions, and medical assistance had to be provided in over 25,200 acute emergencies . 8020 missions fell into the category of internal emergency situations , and the helicopter was alerted 5902 times after traffic accidents . In addition, the air rescuers were called to 4694 other missions. Christoph 9 flew 40% of his missions in Duisburg, about every fifth mission is a false alarm .

In the first year there were only 83 missions for Christoph 9 , by the mid-1980s the number of missions rose to 650 to 750 per year, by 1995 there was an increase to around 950 alarms. Since 1996, the annual numbers have been in the four-digit range. With 1276 missions in 2007, a new high was reached for the Duisburg air rescue location.

The crew of the Christoph 9 is alerted by the rescue control center (RLS) of the fire brigade "Florian Duisburg" via radio receiver . In addition to the emergency number 112, Christoph 9 can be reached on the number 6 33 34, which is mainly dialed by other control centers.

When it comes to water rescue , Christoph 9's team works closely with the diving squadron of the Duisburg professional fire brigade . In an emergency, the helicopter will be manned by three divers (dive leader, backup diver and rescue diver ). Since a real determination of the water depth from the helicopter is not possible, the divers generally do not get out above the water, but are deposited on the bank or a suitable landing site.

helicopter

In 2008 the EC 135 replaced the BO 105

A Eurocopter EC 135 T2i has been stationed at the Duisburg air rescue location since February 2008. The approximately 6.5 million euro expensive machine (including the medical equipment) has a flight speed of 240 kilometers per hour (km / h) and is thus 10 km / h faster than its predecessor. The consumption is 225 liters of kerosene per flight hour. The special technical features of the EC 135 include the Hellas obstacle warning system , for example to detect obstacles such as overhead lines at an early stage, and the TAS anti-collision system. The biggest advantage of the new machine is the size of the cabin interior. While the emergency doctor could only reach the patient's upper body in the old helicopter, today he can reach the upper part of the body down to the knees. The medical equipment of the rescue helicopter essentially corresponds to that of an emergency doctor vehicle (NEF). Although the new helicopter is suitable for night flights, Christoph 9 is only used from sunrise to sunset, at the earliest from 7 a.m. At night, the helicopter does not reach an emergency site as quickly as it does during the day, as the search for a safe landing site often takes additional time.

crew

The crew consists of three members:

The pilots of the rescue helicopter are provided by the Sankt Augustin Federal Police Aviation Squadron (formerly: West), which is also responsible for all flight operations. The emergency doctors are doctors who are employed at the Accident Clinic in Duisburg. You do the additional service as an emergency doctor voluntarily. The helicopter doctor in charge is Daniel Schwarze (as of October 2014). The paramedics are employees of the fire and rescue station 7 in Duisburg-Buchholz with special training in air rescue (HCM = HEMS Crew Member). In total, the Christoph 9 team includes ten pilots, twelve paramedics and thirteen emergency doctors.

Location

The EC 135 is stationed at the professional association accident clinic in Duisburg - Buchholz

The rescue helicopter Christoph 9 is stationed at the professional association accident clinic in Duisburg in the Buchholz district . The clinic, which opened in 1957, is now one of Germany's leading hospitals in the field of trauma surgery and orthopedic surgery . In addition, it has other specialties such as the clinic for hand surgery , plastic surgery and severe burn injuries as well as neurology , internal medicine , radiology , anesthesia and consulting areas .

The air rescue center is located behind the hospital building. It has lounges for pilots and paramedics, a hangar and a landing pad . There is another landing pad on the roof of the clinic.

operation area

The area of operation of the rescue helicopter includes large parts of the Lower Rhine and the western Ruhr area as well as the German-Dutch border area between Venlo and Arnhem. The air rescuers can reach every point in the deployment area within a maximum of 15 minutes. In the event of a disaster, the rescue helicopter is also deployed outside the deployment area.

The cities of Bottrop , Duisburg , Düsseldorf , Essen , Krefeld, Wuppertal, Mönchengladbach , Mülheim an der Ruhr and Oberhausen , as well as the districts of Kleve , Mettmann , Neuss , Wesel and Viersen and the province of Limburg in the Netherlands also form the sponsoring community of the Air rescue center, whose job is the maintenance of the helicopter. With its professional fire brigade, the city of Duisburg forms the core supporter.

Support association

The Friends and Patrons of the Rescue Helicopter "Christoph 9" Duisburg eV has existed since 2004. It was founded in times of tight budgets and aims to keep the quality of equipment and training at a high level despite financial problems.

The association also maintains the private website of “Christoph 9”.
