Christoph 29 is a civil defense helicopter of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, which was made available for air rescue in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. It is flown by pilots from the Fuhlendorf Federal Police Fliegerstaffel. The Eurocopter EC 135 helicopter is stationed at the Bundeswehr Hospital in Hamburg.
history
For the first time, on July 16, 1973, on the initiative of the former Hamburg Senator for the Interior, Helmut Schmidt , a rescue helicopter was put into service by the Bundeswehr with the nickname Florian Hamburg rescue helicopter for the civil rescue service. The nickname was later changed to SAR Hamburg 71 . With the takeover of the helicopter by the Federal Police on January 19, 2006, the radio call name was changed to Christoph 29 .
Accident in 2002
On March 14, 2002, the then SAR71-1 of the Bundeswehr was on its way to an operation at 9:22 a.m. After the abort by the rescue control center, the pilot initiated a reversing maneuver, during which he went into an almost vertical climb and the aircraft completely lost its airspeed. The subsequent descent caused the main rotor blades to impact parts of the aircraft cell, causing the helicopter to crash over Hamburg-Hummelsbüttel . All five crew members were killed.
During the autopsy of the pilot, a blood alcohol concentration of 1.5 per mille was found. Technical causes or misconduct by third parties could not be found. The Bundeswehr's initial secrecy sparked media criticism and doubts about the cause of the accident. However, the authorities are convinced that the driver's alcoholism alone was the cause of the accident.
Bet numbers
Every year Christoph 29 flies around 1,800 missions and thus ranks first among the rescue helicopters of the 12 air rescue centers of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief (as of 2013).
In 2013, the only civil rescue helicopter in Germany, manned exclusively by official institutions, completed 1,858 missions.
