Christoph Gießen is the nickname of an intensive-care transport helicopter of the Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe stationed in Gießen . This can be used in the dual-use process for both relocation and emergency operations. He is ready for action around the clock; since summer 2015, primary missions can also be flown at night. Its area of operation includes Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, northern Bavaria and all of Germany for transfer flights.

history

The Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe eV operated an intensive care transport helicopter at the Reichelsheim airfield since 1996, which was initially only used for relocation services and was tolerated by the state of Hesse. Since 2006 this has been called Christoph Hessen . In the north-west of Hesse there was a gap in the Hessian air rescue network at that time, which consisted of the rescue helicopters Christoph 2 , Christoph 7 , Christoph 25 and Christoph 28 . For this reason, a new location for the helicopter was sought. Christoph Hessen was relocated to Giessen for a period of six months, where a trial run took place and a provisional air rescue station was set up. In 2010 the Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe was again commissioned by the state of Hesse to operate the helicopter. The Giessen location was approved following aviation law audits. In 2014, the Giessen air rescue center went into operation. This is located west of Giessen city center in the Margaretenhütte industrial park. In 2017, Christoph Gießen completed a total of 987 missions, making it the most popular machine of the Johanniter Air Rescue.

On October 10, 2019, a new model, the Airbus H155, went into regular operation.
