Christoph 14 is a rescue helicopter operated by the Federal Ministry of the Interior . The Airbus Helicopters H135 helicopter is stationed at the Traunstein Clinic in Traunstein . The pilots belong to the Federal Police's South Fliegerstaffel. The emergency doctors come from the Traunstein Clinic, the paramedics are provided by the Bavarian Red Cross . The area of ​​application for air rescue extends to a radius of around 60 kilometers around Traunstein. Christoph 14 also flies cross-border missions.

history

A rescue helicopter from the private company "Ortner Süd-Helicopter" was in operation in the Traunstein area from 1972 to 1975. On September 10, 1976, an orange Bölkow Bo 105 was put into service for air rescue in the region of southeast Upper Bavaria .

In January 2007 the leased Bo 105 was returned to the manufacturer and replaced by a Eurocopter EC 135 T2i . Two radial compressor turbines, each with 706 hp, accelerate the helicopter up to 250 km / h, which is 35 km / h faster than the previous model. The purchase of the new Eurocopter cost around 5 million euros.

At the end of 2016 it became known that two new, more powerful Airbus Helicopters H135 will be procured for stations Christoph 14 and Christoph 17 and that an existing machine (D-HZSH) will be upgraded to the H135 standard. The most important innovation, in addition to better performance in so-called hot and high conditions, is the rescue winch with a rope length of 90 meters.

The new machine was officially handed over and put into service in October 2018.

The medical equipment is based in terms of medical equipment , medicines and materials to the ambulance . In Europe it is regulated by EN 13718. This means that on-site care and during transport can be provided at an emergency medical level.

Due to Christoph 14's operational area, which also includes the Chiemgau and Berchtesgaden Alps , there is also an avalanche detection system and up to 90 m long mountain ropes with a double load hook system. The machine also has a rescue winch. The mountain rescue is carried out in cooperation with Bergwacht Bayern .

Incidents

On March 30, 1982 Christoph 14 crashed near Kastl (Altötting) . The helicopter had to avoid a power line when approaching, touched a tree and crashed in the process. The rescue helicopter was a total write-off, all three crew members were injured, some seriously.

On March 22, 1983, the helicopter crashed on its return flight from Berchtesgaden in a snow storm near Gröben, a district of Teisendorf . The three-person crew was killed.

Others

The name Christoph 14 goes back to St. Christopher , the patron saint of travelers. After him, all German rescue helicopters have the BOS radio call name Christoph , followed by a number for rescue helicopters and a description of the location for intensive care transport helicopters.
