Christoph 80 is a rescue helicopter from DRF Luftrettung , which has been used for air rescue in Weiden in the Upper Palatinate and the surrounding area since 2011 .

Station, use and occupation

The DRF Luftrettung helicopter is stationed at the Latsch airfield near Weiden. It is open daily from sunrise , at the earliest 7:00 until sunset , in readiness .

Christoph 80 is alerted by the Integrated Control Center in Northern Upper Palatinate for rescue operations with an emergency doctor's indication if an emergency medical vehicle is not available in time or the type of injury makes it necessary to transport a patient by helicopter. In some regions of the operational area, the helicopter is always faster than a ground-based emergency doctor.

During his missions, Christoph 80 is manned by a pilot from DRF Luftrettung, an emergency doctor from the Weiden Clinic or the St. Marien Amberg Clinic and an emergency paramedic from the Association for Rescue Service and Fire Brigade Alerting Northern Upper Palatinate. The emergency paramedics are part of the helicopter crew ( HEMS crew members ) and support the pilot in the areas of communication and navigation, while the emergency doctor is legally a passenger .

DRF Luftrettung uses a Eurocopter EC 135 for Christoph 80 at the Weiden location . According to the DRF Luftrettung , an H145 will be used in Weiden from April 1, 2021 .

Missions & application area

Christoph 80 reaches all locations within 70 km in up to 20 minutes. The operational area extends in the south to Regensburg , in the north to Hof (Saale) , in the west to Nuremberg and in the east to Stod in the Czech Republic . Thus, the helicopter is used in the control center areas ILS Amberg, ILS Bayreuth and ILS HochFranken.

Although 20% of the potential area of ​​operation is in the Czech Republic , Christoph 80 has not yet flown any missions there. It is currently being examined whether the helicopter can also be used there.
