The Weiden-Latsch airfield is a small airfield near Weiden in the Upper Palatinate .

Location and description

It is located between Weiden-West and the village of Latsch. Due to its short length of 570 m of concrete, it is only used by private individuals, business people from the Aero-Club Weiden and the Oberpfälzer Motorflieger-Club OMC. The further expansion of the runway failed years ago due to a referendum.

In the summer, the tower is manned by a full-time flight controller from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and volunteer flight controllers may be on site later in the evening. Landing is then only possible with the permission of the owner ( PPR ).

The gas station has been out of service since 2017. There is a legal battle over the floor slab.

history

The rescue helicopter Christoph 80, complete with crew and sanitary facilities, has been stationed at the airfield since 2011 . This investment cost around two million euros. Avgas and Jet A-1 are available for refueling around 50 aircraft stationed there .

In October 2012 the airfield was closed for so-called tail-wheel aircraft and weight-controlled aerospace devices such as B. Trikes blocked by the Northern Bavaria Aviation Authority. This blocking is lifted again after repair work.

On January 1, 2019, a flight school was established at Weiden Airfield as its headquarters. AM Flugwelt GmbH is a flight school for gyrocopter, three-axis (sports aircraft, UL aircraft) and even UL helicopters approved by the German Aero Club (DAEC) and the German Ultralight Association (DULV).

Incidents

  • On June 6, 2004, a Grob TW-Ast glider crashed into a meadow during an unsuccessful tow start and was severely damaged on the tail unit.
  • On May 1, 2011, a gyrocopter manned by two people was hit by a gust of wind while taking off at low altitude. The aircraft hit the side again, was badly damaged and the passenger was slightly injured.
  • On March 29, 2014, a powered aircraft had an accident due to a fault in the landing gear when landing on EDQW next to the taxiway in the grass strip.
