ARA Flugrettung is involved in AP³ Luftrettung, the operator of Christoph Liechtenstein

The ARA Flugrettung non-profit GmbH is an Austrian rescue service organization that operates several rescue helicopters , in Austria called emergency doctor helicopters (NAH), in Austria. The company is based in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee in the federal state of Carinthia and is a subsidiary of DRF Luftrettung . ARA stands for "Air Rescue Austria".

history

ARA Flugrettung was founded in 2001 by the Austrian Red Cross Regional Association of Carinthia and DRF Luftrettung . The Fresach helicopter base with the BOS radio call sign "RK-1" was founded in 2001. The helicopter base in Reutte followed in 2002 . The helicopter uses the radio call sign "RK-2". In 2004, the establishment of a third location in Ramsau am Dachstein followed , which was abandoned after a short time. In 2017 the helicopters had 1,800 missions. A collaboration has existed with the ARBÖ since 2018 . In 2019, the helicopters had 1,968 missions. In 2020, the number of deployments fell significantly due to the corona pandemic , as the ski areas were closed.

activities

ARA Flugrettung operates rescue helicopter stations in Reutte ( Tyrol ) and Fresach (Carinthia) all year round . In contrast to other NAH operators in Austria, the Airbus H 145 helicopters are equipped with rescue winches. Otherwise a fixed rope is common in Austria. The helicopters are therefore primarily used for mountain rescue. The rescue winch is used every seventh time the helicopter is used. The crew of a helicopter consists of four people - three are common in Austria. In addition to the pilot and the ambulance, there is a paramedic who also operates the winch and a mountain rescuer on board.

Originally the helicopters were used from 8 a.m. to sunset. The modern helicopters and night vision devices enable extended operating times. The stations have been manned until 10:30 p.m. since 2019. ARA Flugrettung is involved in "AP³ Luftrettung GmbH", a transnational air rescue organization.

Trivia

In contrast to the helicopters of the DRF Luftrettung, the helicopters of the ARA Flugrettung fly under the sign of the Red Cross. Otherwise the helicopters are painted similar to the German helicopters. The ARA Flugrettung logo is also similar to that of DRF Luftrettung. Often times, helicopters are exchanged between the two organizations.

On November 29, 2010 the crew of the helicopter "RK-1" was awarded the "Golden Medal on the Red Ribbon for Services to the Republic of Austria". Pilot Friedrich Stern, air rescuer Siegfried Taferner, emergency doctor Dr. Helge Bachner, winch operator and emergency paramedic Franz Fantic rescued a seriously injured woodworker. The man was trapped under a tree trunk. Conditions were bad. It was already getting dark and the wind conditions spoke against the use of winches. The terrain was also very steep.
