Christophorus 3 is the name given to the location of an emergency helicopter belonging to the Christophorus Air Rescue Association under the umbrella of the Austrian Automobile, Motorcycle and Touring Club (ÖAMTC). The operational area of the helicopter with the aircraft registration OE-XEL extends over southern Lower Austria , Burgenland and Eastern Styria .

The Christophorus 3 - at that time an Écureuil AS 355 helicopter  - was put into operation on September 15, 1984 and was initially stationed at the Wiener Neustadt hospital . This still provides the medical staff for the helicopter to this day. Due to the rapidly increasing number of operations, the base was relocated to the Wiener Neustadt / Ost airfield northeast of Wiener Neustadt after just two months .

In 1993 a separate hangar for the helicopter was built at the Wiener Neustadt / Ost airfield . From 1998 the ÖAMTC gradually converted its air rescue service to the new Eurocopter EC 135 helicopter . Since 2001, the base has been the East Air Rescue Center of the Christophorus Air Rescue Association and has been expanded for this reason. It comprises four hangars, one of which is for Christophorus 3, another for the Christophorus ITH intensive care transport helicopter, which is also stationed here , and a third for a replacement helicopter. The fourth is available for maintenance work.

The operational readiness lasts daily from 7 a.m. until the end of civil twilight . The alarm is issued by the Lower Austria control center . This happens around 1100 to 1400 times a year.

The Christophorus 3 is not identical to the Christophorus Europa 3 rescue helicopter stationed at the Schärding-Suben airfield in Upper Austria .
