Christophorus 2 is the name given to the location of an emergency helicopter belonging to the Christophorus Air Rescue Association under the umbrella of the Austrian Automobile, Motorcycle and Touring Club . The helicopter with the aircraft registration OE-XEQ has been Austria's only emergency helicopter in 24-hour operation since 2017 .

The Christophorus 2 - at the time an Écureuil AS 355 helicopter  - started operations on September 1, 1983 and was the second emergency helicopter in Austria after the Christophorus 1 , which had been put into service two months earlier. He was initially stationed at the Krems University Hospital . In the absence of a hangar, it stood there in the open, had to be covered with tarpaulin overnight and refueled from barrels . For this reason, the first move of the base to the Krems airfield took place on December 9, 1986 . In 1987 an underground hangar was built at the Krems Clinic, after which they returned on November 13, 1987. The clinic still provides the medical staff for the helicopter to this day.

On January 24, 1990, the helicopter was replaced by a newer machine. In 1998 the hangar was modernized. On June 10, 1999, operations were switched to the new Eurocopter EC 135 helicopter . At the end of 2000, the Écureuil AS 355 was again received as an operational machine for - with interruptions - almost two years . On January 30, 2015, the base moved again to a newly built heliport at Krems Airport .

Since January 1, 2017, the Christophorus 2 has been the first and so far only emergency helicopter in Austria to be used 24 hours a day. At the end of 2018, the state of Lower Austria confirmed that the pilot project would go into regular service in January 2019.

The Christophorus 2 is alerted to around 1000 to 1400 missions a year . This alarm is primarily issued by the Lower Austria control center .
