Christophorus 6 is the name given to the location of an emergency helicopter belonging to the Christophorus Air Rescue Association under the umbrella of the Austrian Automobile, Motorcycle and Touring Club . The Eurocopter EC 135 helicopter with the aircraft registration OE-XEY is stationed at Salzburg Airport in the city of the same name .
On April 1, 2001, the Christophorus 6 replaced the emergency doctor's helicopter Martin 1, which was housed by the Federal Ministry of the Interior at Salzburg Airport . This had previously been in use since 1983, the base itself has served as a flight operations center for the Federal Ministry in the state of Salzburg since 1956 .
On May 1, 2006, the four-man crew of Christophorus 6 flew to the landing area on the roof of the Salzburg accident hospital with an accident victim on board . In front of it, the helicopter crashed into a children's playground there , on which there were no people at the time. The pilot was seriously injured in the crash, the three other members of the crew were slightly injured, and the patient did not suffer any further injuries as a result. As part of the investigation into the accident, it was found that the landing area was impermissibly small, but that the pilot was the main culprit due to the excessively high approach speed. As a result of the accident, the hospital's roof landing area was expanded and expanded. The pilot returned to the cockpit less than a year later.
A new hangar for the helicopter at Salzburg Airport was opened on July 20, 2006 after a five-month construction period. The medical staff is provided by the Salzburg State Clinic for Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine . The daily operational readiness lasts from 7 a.m. until the end of civil twilight , the alarm from the Salzburg regional control center occurs around 1000 to 1400 times a year, and the trend is increasing.
