On January 1st, 2004, the non-profit Salzburger Landeskliniken Betriebsgesellschaft mbH (SALK) was founded. At that time, the regional hospital, the Christian Doppler Clinic, the St. Veit Hospital and the Institute for Sports Medicine were brought in. Since 2006, the St. Veit Hospital has been run as the St. Veit State Clinic - teaching hospital of the PMU .

Because there had been no political will for years that the state hospitals also carry out abortions , it was not until April 2005 that the Salzburg Governor Gabi Burgstaller set up an abortion clinic at the Salzburg Regional Hospital .

On January 1st, 2008, the State of Salzburg took over the Tamsweg Hospital as the carrier. On January 1, 2016, it was incorporated into the SALK as the State Clinic Tamsweg - teaching hospital of the PMU . The Mittersill community hospital was also taken over by the State of Salzburg in 2008, but an integration that was discussed was rejected in 2018.

The Hallein Hospital was owned by SALK from 2017, after years of cooperation in the field of surgery and trauma surgery. In 2018, legal ownership was also transferred to the SALK and the house has been run as the Hallein State Clinic - teaching hospital of the PMU since January 1, 2017 .

The Salzburg Accident Hospital is to move to the premises of the LKH Salzburg by 2025, a takeover by the SALK is not planned, the General Accident Insurance Fund remains the provider. However, a trauma center is to be realized at one location together with the University Clinic for Orthopedics and Traumatology.
