Provincial Hospital (Austria)
In Austria, public-law hospitals that are run by the federal states are called state hospitals or state clinics . The abbreviation commonly used is "LKH" or "LK".
history
The development of the system of regional hospitals in Austria was not uniform. At different times, existing community or district hospitals were placed under the leadership of the state.
The first hospital to be rebuilt under the name "Landeskrankenhaus" is the LKH Graz . Its construction was decided by the Styrian Landtag in 1888, started in 1904 and completed in 1912.
In the 1980s, the federal states began to outsource their hospitals into their own companies, which remained 100 percent owned. It was not until 2004 that the state of Lower Austria switched to state clinics. It was only from this point in time until 2008 that the existing community hospitals were taken over by the state's holding company. One reason for this development is the savings potential that lies in the common central administration of hospitals. Associated with this were specializations with the closure of individual departments if a corresponding one was available in a neighboring hospital.
Today almost all specialty hospitals are state-owned, only in Tyrol there are still large district hospitals that belong to the municipalities of the district. There are also religious hospitals (e.g. in Eisenstadt, Schwarzach, St.Veit / Glan), which guarantee basic care, as well as the seven accident hospitals sponsored by AUVA . The Linz General Hospital and the Dornbirn Hospital are the last large urban hospitals outside Vienna, plus the community hospitals in Hallein and Oberndorf in Salzburg.
The last hospitals to be taken over by a state are those of Mittersill and Tamsweg, which came to the state of Salzburg in 2008. For organizational reasons, however, these were not integrated into the Salzburg State Clinics (SALK) and are now managed directly by the state. In 2008 the Wiener Neustadt and Neunkirchen hospital also moved from the municipality to the state holding company. In 2011, a joint LKH was formed from the district hospital and the Hall in Tyrol psychiatric hospital.
From 2011 to 2013, the Styrian district amalgamations also enabled the organizational amalgamation of state hospitals such as Feldbach-Fürstenfeld, Judenburg-Knittelfeld, Rottenmann-Bad Aussee and Mürzzuschlag-Mariazell. Each hospital group eventually became a LKH.
carrier
In Austria, every federal state operates its hospitals through a national company or holding. The oldest companies have Vorarlberg and Styria, the youngest Lower Austria, which only placed the regional hospitals under such a management company in 2004.

Those state hospitals, which are also university clinics, are also financed by the Ministry of Science, doctors receive partial salaries from society and the university.
General
Depending on the situation and size, there is a regional hospital for the standard care of the population in each political district . This hospital is not always located in the district capital. B. the LKH Rottenmann in the Liezen district . Additional specialist departments such as maternity wards and surgery are distributed according to catchment area. There are protests again and again when individual departments are closed.
Special
In addition, specialist clinics such as state neurological clinics, orthopedic hospitals, state care centers (LPZ) and state nursing homes (LPH) are owned by the states. Some of these houses were also built as a result of the realignment of former lung healing facilities (in Styria, for example: Hörgas, Enzenbach and Stolzalpe), which were no longer needed after the tuberculosis period. These institutions were also known as regional special hospitals (LSKH). However, since the term was often equated with state neurological clinic, it had a bad reputation and is no longer used today.
Termination of pregnancy
After years of no political will that the state's own hospitals also carry out abortions , it took until April 2005 when the Salzburg governor, Gabi Burgstaller, set up an abortion clinic at the Salzburg Regional Hospital . As a result, Styria and Lower Austria also made this operation possible in their hospitals. In the remaining federal states, this is only possible at private institutions.
List of state hospitals

Since Vienna is a federal state and a municipality at the same time, the city hospitals are also state hospitals, but do not have this name.
Lower Austria
The Landeskliniken-Holding was founded in 2004, many clinics were only handed over to the state by municipalities and municipal associations from this point in time. This is why the term LKH does not have such a long history in Lower Austria, and the more modern "Landesklinikum" was chosen. Before that, the name LKH only existed in Mödling (1956–2002) and Mauer (1966–1999).
