Hospital of the Merciful Brothers Eisenstadt

The hospital of the Barmherzigen Brüder Eisenstadt is located in Eisenstadt at Johannes-von-Gott-Platz 1.

history

The former Hungarian manorial free town had a poor house around 1500, where brothers of the St. George Order of Knights cared for the sick and wounded. In 1622 Eisenstadt was the residence of the Esterházy family , who then ran a town hospital. In 2008, during the redesign of Kalvarienbergplatz, foundations were discovered that are assigned to a poor house built by Paul I at the end of the 17th century. In 1711 this poor house was given to the Franciscans. Later, a poor house with eight care places for the elderly and the sick was built in Esterházystraße 26. In 1759, with a letter of foundation dated February 20, 1760 and approval from Empress Maria Theresa on June 10, 1760, Prince Paul Anton II. Esterházy handed over the property including a church Salvator mundi or Savior of the World , whose year of construction is assumed to be 1739, and an older predecessor chapel Maria Schnee the Merciful Brothers. The handover ceremony of the hospital, church and pharmacy was on the name day of the first name Anton of Prince Paul Anton II on June 13, 1760 with the bishop of Raab or Gran of the Győr diocese, Count Franz Zichy. When the brothers took over, a new hospital and convent were built and the church was consecrated to St. Anthony of Padua.

Church of Mercy St. Anthony of Padua

Interior of the Church of Mercy

The high baroque building from 1739 is located on the south-west corner of the old hospital and is dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua . The narrow, single-axis facade has moved forward next to the adjoining hospital to the east and shows Ionic pilasters , a flat central projection with gable, a rectangular portal and arched windows with rich frames with leaf and flower decoration and volutes. The west side of the church is divided by barred windows. The roof turret with onion helmet was renewed in its old form between 1964 and 1965.

After the entrance, the convent church has the area under the gallery, which is closed off from the main room with baroque wrought-iron bars. A coat of arms of Prince Paul II Anton Esterházy crowned with a prince's hat is inserted in the round arch filling of the central lattice. The main room is followed by a choir with a rounded apse. The windows in the west and a south window illuminate the church, the upper-story oratory to the right of the choir is closed with a window.

The high altar with side sacrificial portals from the construction period forms a richly carved and gilded tabernacle structure with vases and figures. Above the tabernacle a small painting of the Holy Family with Maria lactans from 1760. Above in the center of the apse is a large painting of St. Anthony of Padua in Adoration of the Infant Jesus by Franz Xaver Wagenschön from 1768. From this, a painting on the left of the Death of St. Joseph and on the right, Death of St. Francis Xavier . Both patrons refer to a good death with St. Joseph and a good death with the Jesuit missionary Franziskus Xaverius , and that at that time the stay in a hospital was mostly the last life path for the patients.

In the refectory there are oil paintings of Princes Nikolaus I , Anton I, Nikolaus II and Paul II. In the sacristy there is a standing clock by Franz Xaver Zoller from Ödenburg.

Haydn organ

The baroque organ of the Barmherzigenkirche from 1732 was built by Johann Franz Frey from Wiener Neustadt. The single manual organ with 8 registers and 429 pipes and a pedal with 12 wooden pipes was restored in 1969 and returned to its original condition. The organ is considered a Haydn organ , which is shown in the center of the gallery parapet with a laurel-framed portrait sculpture of Haydn. Before Joseph Haydn came to Eisenstadt, he had a position as prime violinist with the Barmherzigen Brothers in Vienna-Leopoldstadt from 1755 to 1758. For the possibilities of the Frey organ in this church, Haydn probably composed the small organ solo mass with the title Missa brevis Sti around 1775 or 1777 . Joannis de Deo ( Hob. XXII: 7).

Old hospital

The initial two-storey building was expanded by a third storey in 1930. In the middle of the south facade is a niche with shell decoration with the figure of John of God with the inscription 1762. The gable shows the Esterházy coat of arms.

Pharmacy to the pomegranate

The pharmacy on the ground floor of the old hospital is a room vaulted with plazas with flat belts. In the portal gable is the Esterházy coat of arms, on the left in front of it in the sidewalk area a standing, rounded foundation stone from Paul II. Anton Esterházy with the year name 1759. There is still the pharmacy furnishings with softwood shelves with pilasters and rocail crowns and vases with inscription 1760 and renovation 1944. One of them Clock by Johann Müller from Eisenstadt from 1840. Wall painting from the 19th century with figures of Mohr and Turk with mortars on their heads .
