action
The film is about the difficulty of living as an honest person in the face of inexorable poverty. The title of the film alludes to the Argentine tango singer Carlos Gardel , the idol of the antihero Toribio, played by Alberto Argibay. Toribio's goal in life is to emulate the famous singer and also have success in the music business. At the same time, however, he doesn't stop stealing. Discouraged because he did not want to make his musical breakthrough, he got involved with a smuggler organization.
rating
Alias Gardelito is one of those “New Cinema” films that was made in the late 1950s and early 1960s and is one of the best films of that period, along with films by Simón Feldman, David José Kohon, Rodolfo Kuhn, Manuel Antín and René Mugica. According to Paulo Antônio de Paranaguá , in these films the emphasis is on the psychology of the people, but the social issues that are dealt with in the films provide the background for their actions, as is also the case in Alias Gardelito. In 1968 the film received the Premios Cóndor de Plata for best film of the year.
