Paul II Anton Esterházy de Galantha
Prince Paul II Anton Esterházy de Galantha (born April 22, 1711 in Eisenstadt im Burgenland , † March 18, 1762 in Vienna ) was an imperial field marshal and diplomat.
Life
Paul II Anton studied in Vienna and Leiden and showed a strong interest in culture . As a typical Esterházy , he also supported the Habsburg Maria Theresa from 1741 in the War of the Austrian Succession . In 1742 he became head of a hussar regiment . Due to his numerous successes on the battlefields, the prince was appointed field marshal-lieutenant in 1747 and sent to Naples as the imperial ambassador after the war . He stayed there from 1750 to 1753.
From 1756 he fought in the Seven Years War as a general of the cavalry , but in 1758, already with the rank of field marshal , he retired from military service. He now took care of humanitarian and cultural matters, such as B. the reorganization of his court orchestra through the appointment of Joseph Haydn as Vice Kapellmeister.
The prince, who died childless, was inherited by his brother Nikolaus .
