Joseph I. Esterházy de Galantha (Hungarian: Jozsef Simon Antal III. Esterházy ) (* May 7, 1688 in Eisenstadt (Hungarian: Kismarton ); † June 6, 1721 ibid) was a Hungarian nobleman and third prince and majorate of the Esterházy family .

Life

Joseph came from the marriage of Paul I to Eva Thököly, the sister of the Kuruzenführer Emmerich Thököly , he was the third son from this connection who survived childhood. At the age of 16, he began a career in the military, in the course of which he became a colonel. In 1707 he married Maria Oktavia von Gilleis, who came from the Starhemberg family on his mother's side and was the same age as him. Maria Oktavia gave him two sons: Paul Anton, born in 1711, and Nikolaus, born in 1714 .

When Joseph's predecessor and half-brother Michael died in March 1721 without leaving a son entitled to inherit (he was the father of two daughters), he succeeded him as majorate and head of the princely branch of the family. However, his time as head of the family lasted only 74 days, as he died in June. It is not known whether it was a sudden death or one that was already foreseeable due to prolonged illness. His son Paul Anton, who was only ten years old at the time, was his successor as majorate and head of family.
