The Marienkrankenhaus Vorau (colloquially also MKH Vorau ) is a hospital founded in 1865 in the market town of Vorau in the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district in Styria . It is a non-profit acute hospital with 112 beds that is sponsored by the church: the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception.

The hospital

It is an acute hospital with 112 beds divided into the following areas: surgical department with 20 beds, internal department with 54 beds, IMCU (interdisciplinary ward) with 4 beds, AGR / REM (acute geriatrics, remobilization) with 28 beds and RNS (remobilization and aftercare) with 6 beds.

history

The history of the hospital goes back to the founding of a small community that wanted to live in the spirit of Jesus Christ and according to Mary's example . The first branch was in the leased Toni Häusl in Schachen near Vorau in 1865 . In 1866 a sick woman asked for admission and care to cure her illness.

The founder, Barbara Sicharter (1829–1905) recognized her calling to serve sick, old and needy people. As far as possible, the poor, the sick and the sick were taken into the house. The young sisters were also called to the sick in the surrounding houses. This is how institutional care and home nursing came about. In 1868 a typhus epidemic broke out. One of the first sisters fell victim to her. From 1868 to 1872 the first 4 girls from Vorau joined the new community. All wore the Wenigzeller peasant costume.

In 1875 the Stroblhaus was bought with a small piece of land in Vorau 101, the location of the current hospital. The operating license was granted in 1876 by the district administration with instructions to follow the instructions of the resident surgeon von Vorau, Wilhelm Sgardelli, when caring for the sick. It was called Barbara Sicharters Hospital. Josef Sgardelli took over the medical care for the sick from 1880 to 1891. In the same year 1891 the first branch was founded in Pöllau . Two sisters were sent to the local citizen hospital. They were called Vorauer Sisters. The first extension to the Stroblhaus was made in 1885. The next larger extension took place in the years 1901 to 1902.

The Sgardelli era ended with the takeover of medical management by Hans Mühlbauer, who looked after the sick from 1891 to 1942. In 1897, the small community became a state-recognized association, a cooperative in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary without blemish of original sin. Popularly they were called the Blue Sisters. In 1928 it became an ecclesiastical congregation with diocesan law called the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (CCIM). In the years 2009 to 2012 the nurses' house, which is directly adjacent to the hospital, was extensively renovated. In 2013, the administration wing was expanded to include an extension.

In the course of budget considerations, the then State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Finance, Andreas Schieder ( SPÖ ), considered extensive hospital closings in 2010. The closing of the Marienkrankenhaus was also considered as a result of the savings plan, which totaled more than two billion euros. However, the plans were dropped and the Marienkrankenhaus is currently the largest employer in Vorau. It was also one of the first hospitals in Styria to respond to a call for a special focus on patient safety initiated by the Regional Health Fund. In the meantime the house has received several awards for its commitment from the "Styrian Patient Safety Initiative". In addition, the hospital has been successfully participating in the Clean Hands campaign, an international initiative to promote hand hygiene in the health sector, since 2014 . The Marienkrankenhaus was awarded four bronze medals (2014-2017) and three silver medals (2018-2020) for its hygiene concept. To support the awareness of hand hygiene among patients, visitors and staff, the Marienkrankenhaus has set up a hygiene team and organizes annual action days.

In 2018, the "Joglland Health Center" was founded, an outpatient care center, which guarantees primary care in Vorau and is operated by the Marienkrankenhaus. The company that employs the three doctors from the health center is majority owned by the congregation, which also runs the hospital. The establishment of the health center was initiated after family doctor care threatened to break down in the region.

Emergency doctor base

The Vorau emergency doctor base is manned by doctors from the Marienkrankenhaus Vorau and is available for the entire northern part of the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district, parts of the Weiz district (Birkfeld, Miesenbach, Ratten, Rettenegg, etc.) as well as for neighboring Lower Austria in the Friedberg, Schäffern and the A2 is responsible for this section. An emergency doctor vehicle (NEF) is available to emergency personnel at the Vorau emergency doctor base. The NEF is generally staffed with an emergency doctor and an emergency paramedic. In the event of an emergency, the emergency doctor is brought to the scene, the patient is given first aid and then transported by ambulance in a convoy with the NEF to the nearest hospital. The emergency doctor is with the patient at the ambulance during the transport, the NFS is the driver of the NEF.

The emergency doctor base in Vorau is of essential importance for the seamless coverage and care of patients in this vast area.
