The Kepler University Hospital is a university hospital in Austria's third largest city, Linz . It was formally created on the occasion of the establishment of a medical faculty at the Johannes Kepler University Linz on December 31, 2015, amalgamated from three previously separate hospitals, the General Hospital of the City of Linz (AKh) (now under the location name Med Campus III .), the State Psychiatric Clinic Wagner-Jauregg Linz (now under the location name Neuromed Campus) and the State Women's and Children's Clinic Linz (now under the location name Med Campus IV). With around 1,830 beds, it is the second largest hospital in Austria.

Locations

Several locations are defined as campuses . Here is the official nomenclature:

  • Med Campus I. - Campus building for teaching and research, under construction as of November 2019
  • Med Campus II. - Management of the Kepler University Hospital
  • Med Campus III . - the former General Hospital of the City of Linz (AKh) : all remaining clinics, including a separate clinic for neurology and psychiatry
  • Med Campus IV . - the former regional women's and children's clinic in Linz: clinics for gynecology, obstetrics and gynecological endocrinology, pediatric cardiology, pediatric and adolescent surgery, pediatrics, neonatology
  • Neuromed Campus - the former state mental hospital Wagner-Jauregg in Linz
  • Training center at Med Campus V.
  • Training center at Med Campus VI.
  • Training center on the Neuromed Campus

All buildings of the Med Campus are located on a contiguous site in the east of Linz (Krankenhausstrasse 7a, 9, 26–30, Paula-Scherleitner-Weg 3). Next door is on this terrain and the Emergency Hospital Linz (Garnisonstraße 7), which has not become part of the Kepler University Hospital (the Kepler University Hospital has as part of the Med Campus III. Own Department of Trauma Surgery, which used to be part of the General Hospital of Linz (AKh) was).

The Neuromed Campus, on the other hand, (clinics for child and adolescent psychiatry, neuro-anesthesia and intensive medicine, neurosurgery, neurology, neurological-psychiatric gerontology, psychiatry 1, psychiatry 2, psychiatry with a forensic focus, and psychiatry with a focus on addiction medicine, as well as the school for psychiatric health and nursing care the training center on the Neuromed Campus) is located in the south of Linz (Wagner-Jauregg-Weg 15) approx. 2 km (as the crow flies) or 3.5 km (by car) away.

Both locations are therefore separate from the campus of the Kepler University Linz , which was located in the extreme northeast of the city (Altenberger Straße 69).

history

The founding of the Kepler University Clinic was the result of many years of efforts to set up a medical faculty in Linz. In 1990 the Upper Austrian Landtag held talks on this topic for the first time. From 2005 (application for the establishment of a medical university in Linz in the Upper Austrian state parliament) the project then picked up speed. In 2012 there were plans for the first time to merge the three hospitals and in 2013 the official start of the project took place with resolutions in the National Council and Council of Ministers. The cooperation with the Medical University of Graz was initiated in 2013.

In autumn 2014 the Medical Faculty was founded at the University of Linz. Also in autumn 2014, the first cohort of students started the preclinical study phase at the Medical University of Graz . She moved to Linz in autumn 2016 for the clinical study phase. For the 2018/19 academic year, the JKU has for the first time offered 60 places for students who complete their training entirely in Linz.

In September 2018, Gespag was reorganized from a stock corporation (AG) to a limited liability company (GmbH). On July 12, 2019, the state of Upper Austria transferred the shares of the state of Upper Austria in the Kepler University Hospital to the Upper Austrian Health Holding GmbH.
