The General Hospital of the City of Linz (AKh) was a large urban hospital in Austria's third largest city, Linz . Since December 31, 2015 it has been the Med Campus III location . Part of the Kepler University Clinic (KUK) - merged with the State Psychiatric Clinic Wagner-Jauregg and the State Women's and Children's Clinic .

history

On September 15, 1863, the foundation stone for the General Hospital of the City of Linz was laid. It started operations in 1865 with four employees, including a doctor. Later, the AKh was a modern specialist hospital employing a total of around 2,500 people. It had 21 medical departments and institutes as well as various special outpatient departments. With its 996 beds, around 53,000 inpatients per year and more than 30,000 operations, the city hospital played an important role in the Upper Austrian health system.

Not for profit society

The city hospital was converted into a non-profit GmbH . On January 1, 2006, the AKh, which was completely outsourced from the city administration, was run as a 100 percent subsidiary of the city of Linz. This increased the opportunities for cooperation with other hospitals.

The hospital directors Heinz Brock, Erich O. Gattner and Karl Lenz were equal managing directors of the GmbH.

The new building and renovation of the Linz General Hospital from 1982 to 2002 cost a total of 247 million euros. Among other things, the MED training center was built and opened in October 2000.

Linz hospital district

In the past few years, important hospitals and the new blood bank of the Upper Austrian Red Cross have settled in the area around the Linz General Hospital . This modern blood center supplies all hospitals in Linz and Upper Austria with around 72,000 blood donations annually. In addition to the blood donation area, the new building also houses extensive laboratory, research and treatment facilities.

In spring 2002 the General Accident Insurance Institution (AUVA) started building a new accident hospital in the immediate vicinity of the AKh . The accident medicine center started operations in mid-2005. The new hospital complex on Garnisonstrasse also houses the AUVA office building, a residential building for the staff and an underground car park.

In October 2002, the spag began building the new state women's and children's clinic between the AKh and the state children 's clinic. It replaced the old state women's clinic on Lederergasse and formed a functional unit with the children's clinic. The new accident ambulance of the former AKh is set up in the basement.

Since mid-2005, the Upper Austrian Regional Health Insurance Fund has been building a new specialist outpatient clinic between its dental clinic and the accident hospital on Garnisonstrasse . It opened on September 25, 2007.

A special feature of the hospitals of the city of Linz is that there is an admission calendar, this calendar defines on which days the emergency department of which hospital can be visited. It should be noted that the Linz Accident Hospital , the Neuromed Campus and the Med Campus IV are admitted at all times.

education

The MED training center was part of the Linz General Hospital and the largest educational institution in the health sector in Upper Austria. 400 training positions were available. The center comprised the academies for the speech therapy-phoniatric-audiological service, the medical-technical laboratory service and for the radiological-technical service as well as the school for general health and nursing care . Other offers were special training and further training for the high-level service of health and nursing , nursing assistance courses, training to become senior caregivers and medical assistance courses.

Smoke-free hospital

The AKH was included in the network of smoke-free hospitals of the World Health Organization. After the establishment of a working group, surveys were carried out to find out where there are official and unofficial smoking areas in the Linz General Hospital. The smoking behavior of patients, visitors and employees on the premises was observed. With these efforts, the hospital received an award (bronze) as one of six Austrian hospitals from the Austrian Network of Health Promoting Hospitals (ÖNGFKG), the WHO and the German Network of Smoke- Free Hospitals.
