The Aktien-Gesellschaft "Ems" (short AG EMS ) is a shipping company in Emden ( Lower Saxony ) that operates the ferry traffic from the Emden harbor and from Eemshaven ( Netherlands ) to the East Frisian North Sea island of Borkum . At the same time, AG Ems is the parent company of other companies, particularly in the tourism sector.

history

The stock corporation was founded in 1889 for the seaside resort traffic from Emden to Borkum. Its core business is the liner service from Emden and Eemshaven to this North Sea island. Their fields of business were expanded considerably through the takeover of the Borkumer Kleinbahn , enlargement of the ship fleet and entry into air traffic to Borkum.

The AG Ems group of companies includes:

In September 2018, the Federal Administrative Court ruled that in the case of the Borkum ferries operated by the Ems AG, local transport was available and that free travel for disabled people in ordinary ferries between Emden and Borkum was to be recognized.

Accident of the catamaran Polarstern

On August 4, 2008, the catamaran Polarstern had an accident on the way back from the island of Helgoland in the direction of Borkum and Emden on the open sea. In this incident, the most serious in the company's history, a front window of the ship was destroyed. Several people were injured.

Selling Northern HeliCopter

The DRF Foundation Luftrettung non-profit AG ( DRF Luftrettung ) took over 100 percent of the shares in Northern HeliCopter GmbH with retroactive effect from January 1, 2019 .

Ship propulsion with LNG

The Borkum ferry Ostfriesland , which has been converted to LNG propulsion , is easy to recognize by the high white degassing mast between the chimneys

Recently (2014/2015) AG Ems has distinguished itself as gas-powered ships in environmentally friendly shipping with the conversion of the Ostfriesland ferry and the new construction of the new Helgoland seaside resort ship for the subsidiary Reederei Cassen Eils GmbH & Co.KG. The Ostfriesland is since the renovation, the first ship under German flag with LNG -drive; the Helgoland built at the Fassmer shipyard is the first new ship to be built with LNG propulsion under the German flag.
