The Münsterland is a car ferry , which is mainly operated on the connection between Eemshaven and Borkum . Occasionally the ferry is also used in traffic to Emden . The ship transports people, goods and vehicles.

The ship

The Münsterland was built under construction number 193 at the Martin Jansen shipyard and machine factory in Leer. The keel laying of the ship took place on December 11, 1985, the launch on May 31, 1986. It was completed in July 1986.

The ship is powered by two 8-cylinder four-stroke engines with an output of 956  kW each.

Following a funding commitment from the federal government in November 2018, the shipping company also put out a tender for the Münsterland to extend and retrofit to an LNG drive, as has been in use on the sister ship Ostfriesland, which was completed in 1985, since 2015 . The conversion will take place at the Koninklijke Niestern Sander shipyard in Farmsum , where construction of the new aft ship began in May 2020.

Predecessor ships

Between 1964 and 1976 another ship with the same name sailed the same route.
