The Nordlicht is a high-speed ferry of the AG Ems designed as a catamaran , which operates between Borkum and Emden .
The ship
AG EMS had the catamaran built from 1988 to 1989 at the AS Fjellstrand Aluminum Yachts shipyard in Omastrand, Norway. The keel was laid on September 8, the launch on November 28, 1988. The ship was completed in April 1989.
The ferry is powered by two 16-cylinder four-stroke diesel engines from MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH (16 V 396 TB) with an output of 2040 kW each in conjunction with a water jet drive .
The catamaran has operated daily between Borkum and Emden since it went into service. The journey time is about an hour. At night the catamaran lies in the port of Emden.
Predecessor ships
A ferry named Nordlicht was already in service with the Ems AG from 1976 to 1985 . She was sold to Tahiti in 1985 , where she served under the name Raromatai-Ferry in the island ferry service until 1997 and was finally sunk off Papeete in April 2003 .
