Octávio Sérgio da Costa Moraes , known as Octávio Moraes , often referred to simply as Octávio (* 9 July 1923 in Belém ( Pará ), Brazil ; † 19th October 2009 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian footballer who plays for Botafogo FR played .

Octávio Moraes played from 1942 to 1953 for the Rio de Janeiro top club Botafogo FR . He scored 174 goals in 200 games for the club. He was a member of the first team that after the merger of Botafogo FC and CR Botafogo to Botafogo FR 1948 - after three runner-ups in a row - under coach Zezé Moreira introduced the first state championship in Rio de Janeiro for the club. After the departure of the controversial Heleno de Freitas, the striker was one of the team's top performers alongside Sílvio Pirilo and Paraguaio and, together with Orlando from Fluminense FC , was the top scorer of the competition with 21 goals.

In 1949 he made his debut for the Brazilian national soccer team , for which he completed four games. He scored his only goal for the Seleção during the Copa América 1949 , which he won with Brazil, although he was not used in the playoff against Paraguay .

Octávio Moraes is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of footvolley on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro - which is almost ubiquitous there today. He also had professional success as an architect and composer. His mother, Eneida de Moraes, was a well-known writer and journalist. He was also president of the AGAP players' union, the Associação de Garantia ao Atleta Profissional , today's SAFERJ - Sindicato dos Atletas de Futebol do Estado do Rio de Janeiro .

In later years Octávio Maoraes worked as a columnist for the renowned daily newspaper Jornal do Brasil . Octávio Moraes died on October 19, 2009 at the age of 86 in Rio de Janeiro as a result of complications following a broken leg.
