Karel Weis

Karel Weis (born February 13, 1862 in Prague , Austrian Empire ; † April 4, 1944 there ) was a Czech composer and musician of Bohemian origin.

Life

At the age of eleven, Weis came to the Prague Conservatory in 1873 and studied there until 1878. In the same year he switched to the Prague Organ School and stayed there until 1881; during the same period he was also a student of Zdeněk Fibich . Through his advocacy and support, he got a job in 1881 as organist in St. Stephen and choirmaster at the main synagogue in Prague.

Between 1882 and 1883 the Moravian Music Society in Kroměříž ( Moravia ) entrusted him with a teaching position. Then Weis returned to Prague and became a violinist in the orchestra of the National Theater in Prague. In 1886 the Švanda Theater Society appointed him as conductor; until the end of 1887 he performed in this office mostly in Prague and Brno .

Between 1896 and 1904 Weis worked as an assistant to the violinist František Ondříček .

Seven weeks after his 82nd birthday, Weis died on April 4, 1944 in Prague, where he found his final resting place.

In addition to various little things, Karel Weis' work mainly consists of operas and operettas .
