The Nura Nova is a Ro-Ro - Ferry provided by the Spanish shipping company Trasmediterránea in ferry traffic between Mallorca and Menorca is used. The ferry was built in 1977 for AG Ems as Emsland for a ferry line between Eemshaven in the Netherlands and Esbjerg in Denmark .

history

The ship was ordered by AG Ems for a new ferry service between Eemshaven and Esbjerg. The shipping company wanted to give hauliers the opportunity to circumvent the Sunday driving ban in Germany and to facilitate truck traffic between the Benelux countries and Denmark, which is made more difficult by national concessions .

The ship was ordered from the Usuki Tekkosho shipyard in Japan . Compared to other shipyards, including various shipyards in northern Germany, the shipyard had made a significantly cheaper offer (Japanese shipyards tried to gain a foothold on the European market with cheap offers - so the shipyard had the construction for the equivalent of around 8 million. German shipyards offered DM 24 million).

The keel of the ship was laid on February 7, 1977, the launch on April 30, 1977. While the ship was being equipped, it became clear that the ship was significantly heavier at the rear than at the front and that it was therefore clearly sloping. To remedy the problem, the auxiliary diesel engine was moved towards the bow and the rear saloon was dismantled and rebuilt from aluminum to reduce weight. The renovations did not completely solve the problem and the ship remained heavy on the stern .

The ship was delivered to AG Ems on August 3, 1977. The transfer trip to Emden lasted from August 4th to September 8th of that year. After the transfer, further defects on the ship were remedied at the North Sea Works in Emden. So u had to a. the portholes on the lower deck, which would have been under water if loaded, are removed. In addition, it turned out that the bow ramp of the ship was too short, so that the shore ramp had to be placed on the ramp of the ship in the port.

In autumn 1977 the ferry service between Eemshaven and Esbjerg started. After the legal situation for truck traffic from the Benelux countries changed in 1978, the line was discontinued due to falling demand. The ship was initially laid up in Emden ; According to some sources, it was also used by the Deilmann shipping company between Neustadt and Rønne for some time . From August to December 1978 the ship was used by the Harle shipping company Warrings for butter trips from Eemshaven. The car deck of the ship was converted into a supermarket for use. Following the employment, the ship was launched again.

In May 1979 the ship was chartered to the Spanish shipping company Islena de Navegacion (ISNASA), which used it in the Mediterranean between Algeciras and the Spanish exclave of Ceuta . This assignment also only lasted a few months. At the end of November 1979 the ship was laid up again in Emden.

In 1984 the ship chartered the French shipping company Emeraude Ferries between Saint-Malo and the Channel Islands Jersey and Guernsey for around four weeks from the beginning of May after their ferry Solidor ran aground and was therefore out of action for some time. Then AG Ems used the ship in ferry traffic between Emden and Borkum .

1985 followed from June to August a charter operation for the Swedish shipping company AB Ölandsborg, which used the ship between Borgholm in Sweden and Rønne on Bornholm . Once a week the ship also ran between Rønne and Travemünde . After the charter expired, the ship was laid up again in Emden.

In January 1986, the ship was sold to the Norwegian shipping company Scandi Line , founded in 1985, for around 25 million kroner . The shipping company used the ship, renamed Bohus and brought under the flag of Norway, from mid-March 1986 between Sandefjord in Norway and Strömstad in Sweden. The ship soon proved to be too small and was replaced in May 1988 by the much larger Bohus II . As a result, it was chartered to the Norwegian shipping company Saltens, who wanted to use it between Ystad and Rønne. The mission was not realized and the ferry was chartered out to the British shipping company Weymouth Marine Services in the spring of 1989 . Weymouth Marine Services started using the ship as St. Julien in the ferry service between Weymouth and the Channel Islands of Alderney and Guernsey from May of that year . Due to problems with the charter payments, the charter contract was terminated and the ship withdrawn from the line in October 1989. Scandi Line sold the ship to Bornholm Express, which operated it from May 1990 as Östersjön under the Swedish flag between Ystad and Rønne.

In March 1992 the ferry was sold to the Elba Ferries shipping company belonging to the Italian shipping company Corsica Ferries . The ship was renamed Jon for the transfer to the Mediterranean . Elba Ferries operated the ship as Elba Nova under the flag of Italy between Piombino and Portoferraio on the island of Elba . From October 1994 to March 1995 it drove again for Emeraude Lines from Saint-Malo to Jersey and Guernsey. It was then launched in La Spezia .

In 1998 the ferry was sold to the Spanish shipping company Isleña Marítima de Contenedores (ISCOMAR). The ship now operating under the flag of Spain was renamed Nura Nova . The shipping company used the ship between Alcúdia on Mallorca and Ciutadella on Menorca. In November 2016, Formentera Cargo took over the ship in an auction after ISCOMAR had previously suspended the ferry connection. In February 2017 it was chartered to the shipping company Trasmediterránea, which replaced the Alcantara Dos ferry . The ship continues to operate between Alcúdia and Ciutadella.

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by two four-stroke - six-cylinder - diesel engines of the Japanese engine manufacturer Niigata (type: 6MG31EZ) each with 1,470  kW power driven. The motors act on a fixed propeller via reduction gears . The ship is equipped with an electrically powered bow thruster with an output of 230 kW.

Two generators, each with an apparent power of 625 kVA, are available for generating electricity on board,  each of which is driven by a diesel engine (type: 6UAL-UT). In addition, an emergency generator with 75 kVA apparent power is available, which is also driven by a diesel engine (type: 6CT8.3G).

The ship was initially approved for 800 passengers. Pullman beds were available for 20 passengers, which were installed in cabins in the rear of the ship during the shipyard stay at the North Sea Works before the ferry service between Emshaven and Esbjerg began.

The continuous vehicle deck can be reached via a bow and a stern ramp . In front of the bow ramp is a bow visor that opens upwards . The vehicle capacity of the ship was initially given as 75 cars. In 1993, hanging decks were installed on the car deck, increasing the capacity to 107 cars. Trasmediterránea markets the ship with a capacity of 300 passengers and 150 cars on 200 lane meters .

The deck with the facilities for the passengers is located above the vehicle deck. There is a cafeteria at the front of the ship and a self-service restaurant at the rear. In the bridge deck is with the bridge in the front part of the ship.
