The banker Karsten, son of respected parents, lives with his girlfriend Laura in the small town of Altena in the Sauerland . When one day she is not at home, he has a party with friends and colleagues. All the guests except Anna left the party late at night. Karsten and Anna come closer without a word and kiss. Shortly afterwards she collapses and Karsten runs to a neighboring ambulance to get help. But Anna dies in his apartment.
The death of the young woman causes great excitement in the small town. Colleagues ask what happened, and Karsten's parents are very concerned about what happened. Laura is confused and suspicious, but initially everyone stands by Karsten. But then it turns out that nobody knew Anna and it was only by chance that she got to Karsten's apartment.
The public prosecutor's office begins its investigation. Soon Karsten is no longer a witness, but an accused . The public learns that Anna was married and had a young daughter. It was also her birthday on the day in question. Little by little, more and more friends and colleagues distance themselves from Karsten. His supervisor transfers him to another department without direct customer contact. Finally, Laura separates from him and Karsten's parents also wonder what really happened that night. His social decline seems unstoppable.
It comes to the process in which an expert confirms that Anna suffered from asthma and that, in connection with high alcohol consumption, a cardiac arrhythmia with a fatal outcome must have occurred. The combination would probably have been fatal even if Karsten intervened directly. Before a judgment is passed, the widower withdraws his criminal complaint. Karsten regains control of his life and takes advantage of it for himself. He asks his supervisor to put him in charge of the branch. Otherwise he will publicly protest against the transfer. He also blackmailed a friend who should see to it that Laura returns to him. His supervisor calls all employees together. In the presence of his parents, he appoints him as branch manager. Shortly thereafter, Laura appears and the two embrace.

Tilmann P. Gangloff praises how the film is gradually transformed into a “moral painting”. At the same time, he criticizes the “undynamic” camera work and long shots. Nonetheless, he comes to the conclusion that “Suddenly ” shows itself to be “bitter lesson in opportunism ”. Frank Jürgens from the NOZ characterizes the film as “a cool, distant drama in which prejudice and growing mistrust play a central role.” He praises the clever society portrait of narrow-minded petty bourgeoisie and rates the film as “calmly staged and very exciting!” Regarding Karsten's “campaign of revenge”, Claudia Lenssen notes in the Tagesspiegel : “Another cinema begins with Aslı Özge. Your protagonist doesn't care about offering the audience easy identification, but rather takes revenge in the way that understands his surroundings. "
