The Black Forest Mountain Rescue Service (BWS) is one of the two, mostly voluntary , mountain rescue organizations in the state of Baden-Württemberg , along with the Württemberg Mountain Rescue Service .

The service area extends over a large part of the Black Forest and its peripheral areas from Pforzheim in North Baden to the Swiss border . It is a registered association based in Freiburg im Breisgau and a corporate member of the German Red Cross Landesverband Baden eV, in contrast to the other mountain rescue regional associations, which are part of the DRK as communities . The BWS is currently divided into 24 local groups and 2 “special mountain rescue groups”. The tasks of the Black Forest Mountain Rescue are the rescue service in rough terrain , also rescue at heights , and nature conservation .

The Black Forest Mountain Rescue Service performs around 1,500 missions a year and has around 1,500 volunteer employees. The regional office of the Black Forest mountain rescue service is located in Kirchzarten (near Freiburg).

history

On March 19, 1922, the organization's first local group was founded in Freiburg, and in the same year a local group was founded in Karlsruhe. By 1945 ten more local groups had been established in the Black Forest department.

After the Second World War, the dissolution of the Deutsche Bergwacht eV as an umbrella organization was ordered by the occupying powers. In most federal states, the former mountain rescue departments joined the respective regional associations of the German Red Cross, while the French occupying power, which controlled most of the service area of the former Black Forest department, allowed the Black Forest mountain rescue service to be established as an independent organization.

presence

In order to fulfill the mission of rescuing from rough terrain, which is anchored in the Rescue Service Act, the Black Forest Mountain Rescue Service maintains 23 mountain rescue stations and 37 mountain rescue stations. These are occupied especially on weekends during the winter sports season. The mountain rescue service is present with up to 12 mountain rescuers in key areas such as the Feldberg area. Outside of business hours, the rapid response group of the nearest local group moves out in the event of an emergency . The mountain rescue service also looks after many different sporting events throughout the Black Forest, such as the Ultra Bike Marathon or the 2017/18 Snowboard World Cup on the Feldberg .
