In 1936/1937, with the help of the German mountain rescue service in Munich, under the direction of Kurt Butz, a Württemberg department of the German mountain rescue service was founded in Stuttgart. The first local group in Stuttgart was also launched in 1937. A year later, other local groups followed in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Göppingen, Heidenheim and in the Black Forest. After the war, the mountain rescue department Württemberg was re-established with the local groups in Stuttgart, Esslingen, Schwäbisch Gmünd and Göppingen in 1948/1949.
