Simtek Grand Prix is a former racing team that grew out of the motorsport technology company Simtek Research Ltd., founded in 1989 by Max Mosley and Nick Wirth . emerged and took part in the Formula 1 World Championship in 1994 and 1995 . The name "Simtek" consists of the words " Sim ulation" and " tech nology" together.

Company history

Simtek Research was initially a service provider for the motorsport industry. The aim of the company was to provide effective and inexpensive developments for existing motorsport teams. Initially, Simtek operated in Wirth's private apartment, but in 1990 the company expanded and moved into a factory in Banbury , which also included a wind tunnel. Through Mosley's mediation, Simtek received numerous development contracts from Formula 1 and Formula 3000 teams. The Simtek customers included the Équipe Ligier .

Simtek took a first step towards Formula 1 in 1991 when the company developed a Formula 1 chassis for BMW , which was to serve as a test vehicle for the company's possible entry into Grand Prix racing . However, BMW initially did not pursue the project any further. In 1992 Simtek passed the vehicles on to the Italian Andrea Moda Formula team , which started them with ten-cylinder Judd engines under the name Andrea Moda S921 . Before the end of the season, however , the FIA excluded the team from the World Cup. For the 1993 season , Simtek was commissioned to develop a chassis for the newly founded Spanish team Team Bravo España , which was to be used by Nicola Larini and Jordi Gené . However, when the designated team boss Jean-Pierre Mosnier died shortly before the start of the season, this project also came to a standstill.

From 1994 Simtek finally competed in Formula 1. The team competed directly with the racing team Pacific Racing , which debuted in Formula 1 at the same time. Simtek outperformed Pacific in both 1994 and 1995; However, Simtek could not catch up with the established teams. The history of the team was overshadowed by the fatal accident of pilot Roland Ratzenberger on April 30, 1994 at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix . In May 1995 the team was insolvent; since the sponsors refused to make further payments, it stopped racing after the 1995 Monaco Grand Prix .

The team's vehicles were designed by Nick Wirth, who also acted as team boss. Overall, the Simtek makes S941 and S951 contested 20 grand prizes in Formula 1; the best results were two ninth places at the 1994 French Grand Prix and the 1995 Argentine Grand Prix .
