Jean-Marc Gounon (born January 1, 1963 in Aubenas ) is a French racing driver and the father of Jules Gounon . He contested nine Formula 1 races, but did not score any championship points.
Career
Beginnings in motorsport
Gounon first appeared in 1989 when he won the French Formula 3 championship . From 1990 to 1992 he drove in Formula 3000 , where he showed a consistent performance and took several victories.

1993
In 1993 , Gounon entered Formula 1. Initially, the March Engineering team was planned. March has suffered financial hardship since the former team owner Akira Akagi was arrested in September 1991 and had only been able to get through the 1992 season with great difficulty. For 1993, the team management had planned to use two cars for Gounon and Jan Lammers . The team, the cars and also the drivers showed up for the opening race in South Africa; however, the team management did not have enough money to sell the cars at South African customs. In addition, there were no engines, as Ilmor , the envisaged engine supplier, initially insisted on the payment of invoices due from 1992. The March Engineering team therefore entered neither the South African Grand Prix nor any other race in the 1993 season and was later liquidated.
Gounon later made his Formula 1 debut at the Japanese Grand Prix . For the last two races of the season, he bought the Italian team Minardi and replaced Christian Fittipaldi , whereupon there was a legal dispute between Minardi and Fittipaldi because the Brazilian had paid in advance for the entire 1993 season. Gounon dropped out in both races.
1994
For the 1994 season he did not succeed in getting a cockpit. For his home race, the French Grand Prix , he replaced the Italian Andrea Montermini at the British racing team Simtek , who was unable to participate in the following races due to a broken leg. Gounon drove the Grand Prix of France, England, Germany, Hungary, Belgium, Italy and Portugal for Simtek. In each of these races he was able to qualify his Simtek S941 . Nevertheless, he was replaced after seven races during the season by Domenico Schiattarella , who brought new sponsorship money to the team. Thus, Gounon's Formula 1 career was over after nine races.
FIA GT Championship
He then switched to the FIA GT Championship and in 1997 drove three podium places for Gulf Team Davidoff . In the same year he competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and won the GT1 class. Gounon stayed in the FIA-GT in the 1998 season and shared a Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR with Marcel Tiemann . In the first race in Oschersleben he finished on the podium and was able to place several places in the top ten in subsequent races. In 1999 he was to start for the AMG-Mercedes factory team in Le Mans. Mark Webber , with whom he shared the vehicle, overturned during practice at the end of the Mulsanne Straight, with the vehicle destroyed and withdrawn by the team.
Sports prototypes
In addition to the 24-hour race at Le Mans, he drove for the French DAMS team in the FIA sports car championship . Gounon contested six of the nine championship races in a prototype , won four races with Éric Bernard , including the 2:30 hour race in Donington , and dropped out in the other two races with technical defects. Together with DAMS he also took part in some races of the American Le Mans Series in 1999 . Gounon achieved his best result together with Christophe Tinseau at the Grand Prix of Las Vegas . There he finished the race behind two prototypes of the Schnitzer works team , to which he switched in the following season. Together with Bill Auberlen, Gounon now drove a BMW V12 LMR . However, the driver pairing was unable to match the performance of the sister car and finished every race behind Jörg Müller and JJ Lehto . From 2004 to 2007 Gounon drove for Courage Compétition in the newly established Le Mans Series . His best results were two LMP2 class wins in the 2004 season.
