Marcel Tiemann (born March 19, 1974 in Hamburg ) is a German racing driver .
Career
His father Hans-Jürgen Tiemann opened the Heide-Park near Soltau in 1978 , and was successful as a driver and sponsor in touring car motorsport at the Nürburgring in the 1990s , especially in 1999, in which Tiemann / Zakowski all VLN races that VLN championship as well as the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring for the second time .
Motivated by his father, Marcel got his driver's license at the age of 16 and took part in racing courses without any great ambition. In 1992 he made his debut in ADAC Formula Junior at the age of 18 . He successfully completed the bank clerk apprenticeship that began after graduating from high school in 1995. In 1994 Tiemann became the German Formula Renault Champion and switched to the German Formula 3 Championship for the coming season , where he was only able to achieve 13th place in the overall standings. In 1996, however, he won the prestigious F3 race in the framework program of the Monaco Grand Prix , after which he became a works driver at Mercedes-Benz from 1997.
In the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR sports car , he drove in the 1997 FIA GT championship with the AMG team and in 1998 with the Persson Motorsport team. In 1999 it was no longer used in the course of the year due to the series of accidents involving the two Mercedes-Benz CLRs at Le Mans .
From 2000 he was active in the DTM , initially with Mercedes, then from 2003 with Opel, for which he won the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring that same year together with Manuel Reuter , Timo Scheider and Volker Strycek .
He has won this race four more times since 2006 on a Manthey- Porsche, so that the Tiemann family can now boast a total of seven overall victories.
On May 23, 2010, Tiemann was involved in a starting accident at the GT Open in Imola (San Marino). The Audi R8 LMS GT3 was hit by several vehicles and Marcel Tiemann was critically injured. In the hospital, a fractured cervical vertebra, several broken ribs and a traumatic brain injury were found. According to information from Manthey Racing, he was transferred to the hospital in Munich-Großhadern after improving his health in the Imola hospital.
After a very long period of rehabilitation, Tiemann can return to normal life, but not as a professional racing driver. In the summer of 2012, Tieman sat in a racing vehicle for the first time and drove the vehicle on a test track. He then thanked his friend who organized this drive and the Audi Driving Experience .
In May 2013, supported by Mercedes-Benz AG, he took part in the Mille Miglia classic car reliability drive with a racing partner , where he drove a Mercedes SSK racing car from 1928 .
