The 1994 Grand Prix of Germany (officially the Grand Mobil 1 Prize of Germany ) took place on July 31 at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim and was the ninth race of the 1994 Formula 1 World Championship .

After the British Grand Prix , Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with 27 points ahead of Damon Hill and 47 points ahead of Jean Alesi . Benetton-Ford led the constructors' championship with 24 points ahead of Williams-Renault and with 25 points ahead of Ferrari .

With Michele Alboreto (once) joined former winner of this Grand Prix. However, Alboreto won this Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, so that no competitor has won at the Hockenheimring before.

training

In the first free practice, Hill set the fastest time ahead of Schumacher and Berger. Alesi finished the second free practice as the fastest, followed by Coulthard and Hill.

Qualifying

There were two qualifying sessions, one on Friday and one on Saturday. Most of the drivers set their best time on Saturday. Berger secured pole position ahead of Alesi and Hill.

At the start of the race there were accidents in the middle and back field in which several vehicles were involved. A total of nine drivers did not finish the first lap, including Alesi, who had to retire due to electronic problems. Jos Verstappen drove to his pit stop on lap 15 , when gasoline leaks ignited and a brief, strong fire broke out. Verstappen then had to end the race.

Berger won the race unchallenged ahead of Olivier Panis and Éric Bernard .
