Reports

background

A field of participants that had remained unchanged two weeks previously compared to the British Grand Prix entered the tenth round of the World Championship in Germany.

training

The two Williams drivers Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese easily qualified for the front row in front of the two McLaren MP4 / 7A of Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger . Jean Alesi shared the third row with Michael Schumacher . The fourth row was formed by the two Ligier pilots Érik Comas and Thierry Boutsen .

run

Patrese had the best start that put him in the lead in the first few meters. In the first corner, however, he was overtaken again by his team-mate Mansell. Behind the two Williams were the two drivers of the McLaren, Benetton, Ferrari , Ligier and Lotus teams .

With the exception of the two Williams drivers, all opponents opted for a race without an interim pit stop. As a result, Senna came second on lap 15 and Schumacher came third on lap 20 ahead of Patrese.

In the 33rd lap, Patrese passed Schumacher and caught up with Senna. When trying to overtake it on the last lap, he spun out. Due to the distance he had covered, he was nevertheless classified as eighth. Mansell won ahead of Senna, Schumacher, Brundle, Alesi and Comas.

With his eighth win of the season, Mansell set a record set by Senna in 1988 in the tenth race of the year . After this race, Senna had no chance to defend his title again. With a win in Hungary Mansell was world champion, and Patrese and Schumacher, in contrast to Senna, still had theoretical chances.
