Jackie Stewart on the way to victory
Jean-Pierre Beltoise in the fog

Two weeks after the surprising victory of private driver Jo Siffert at the Grand Prix of Great Britain , an almost unchanged field of participants arrived at the Nürburgring. It was only supplemented by two local guest starters. Kurt Ahrens completed his third Grand Prix at the wheel of a private Brabham , while Hubert Hahne like last year at the wheel of a Formula 2 - Lola-BMW took with 2-liter engine.

Dan Gurney made a first in Formula 1 this weekend by becoming the first Grand Prix driver to use a full face helmet .

training

All training units took place on a wet track. Jacky Ickx achieved pole position with a lap time around ten seconds faster than his team mate Chris Amon , who came second in the first row next to third-placed Jochen Rindt . The second row was shared by Graham Hill and Vic Elford . Jackie Stewart qualified for sixth place on the grid.

run

On the morning of the race day, when there was already thick fog and visibility was less than 50 meters in some parts of the course , the race management commissioned GPDA representatives Joakim Bonnier and Graham Hill to assess the situation. Not least because of the around 250,000 spectators who had traveled, the two pleaded for the race to be held and against a cancellation. In the hope that things would improve, the start was postponed for an hour. Although there was no change, the race finally started.

Hill initially took the lead ahead of Amon, Rindt and Stewart. In the course of the first lap, however, Stewart managed to take over the lead, which he steadily expanded from then on and did not give up until the end of the race. Among other things, he benefited from his Dunlop rain tires, which appeared to be superior to those of the competition. After two laps on the approximately 22.8-kilometer-long race track, his lead was already 34 seconds ahead of Hill in second place, which in the meantime turned once on the wet road. However, Hill managed to get out, turn his vehicle around and start again before the third-placed Rindt reached the spot. Otherwise this could have led to a critical situation under the poor visibility.

In the end, Stewart won by around four minutes over Hill and Rindt. In view of the superiority under these difficult conditions, the victory is considered one of the greatest of his career. After Amon was eliminated due to an accident, fourth place went to his team-mate Ickx.

The race is considered the greatest rain and fog battle in Formula 1 history. According to legend, one of the overtaking maneuvers in the thick fog should not have been noticed by either of the two racing drivers involved.
