Reports
background
Some teams used the three-week break after the British Grand Prix for extensive test drives. A few pilots whose entry into the Grand Prix scene was imminent were used, such as Ayrton Senna , Pierluigi Martini or Ivan Capelli . But the former racing driver Stirling Moss was also given the opportunity at Brabham to complete a few test laps at the age of 53.
Ahead of the German Grand Prix there were first rumors that Patrick Tambay , the Scuderia Ferrari perhaps the end of the season in favor of Michele Alboreto will have to leave and that Arrows from 1984 next to Brabham and ATS as a third team of BMW am equipped with turbo engines.
training
Again, the practice resulted in a double pole for Ferrari, with Patrick Tambay ahead of René Arnoux this time in contrast to qualifying at Silverstone . Andrea de Cesaris and Nelson Piquet formed the second row in front of the two Renault drivers Alain Prost and Eddie Cheever . Mauro Baldi and Riccardo Patrese followed in seventh and eighth place in front of the two Toleman drivers Derek Warwick and Bruno Giacomelli , who completed the top ten.
As in the previous race, Keke Rosberg finished twelfth on the grid as the best of the naturally aspirated drivers.
As it was raining during the second qualifying session on Saturday, none of the participants could beat the best time they achieved on Friday. The lap times were well over two minutes and the average speeds under 190 km / h.
run
Tambay, who initially took the lead, was overtaken by his team-mate Arnoux on the second lap. He then defended the top position to the finish, with the exception of a few laps, during which the now mandatory pit stops took place.
When Tambay retired on the eleventh lap due to an engine failure, Piquet took second place. When Arnoux headed for the pits on lap 25, the Brazilian briefly took the lead. After he had completed his stop to refuel and change tires, he came back on the track in second place. He held this position until lap 43, when he had to retire due to a fuel leak. As Cheever had also been eliminated shortly before due to a technical defect, de Cesaris took second place. Behind Patrese and Prost, Niki Lauda crossed the finish line in fifth. However, because he briefly reversed during his pit stop, he was subsequently disqualified. As the following pilots moved up as a result, Jacques Laffite and John Watson also made it into the points.
