Reports
background
After the British Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with twelve points ahead of Jenson Button and 17 points ahead of Mark Webber . McLaren-Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 29 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 113 points ahead of Ferrari .
Fernando Alonso contested his 150th Grand Prix at the German Grand Prix.
With Michael Schumacher (four times), Rubens Barrichello , Alonso, Hamilton and Webber (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
While Bruno Senna , who had been replaced by Sakon Yamamoto at the British Grand Prix , returned to his cockpit, Karun Chandhok had to hand over his HRT cockpit to Yamamoto.
training
The first free practice took place under rainy conditions. While the drivers used rain tires at the beginning, they switched to intermediate tires towards the end of the session. Adrian Sutil coped best with these conditions and achieved the fastest lap time with over a second ahead of Felipe Massa and Button. Fairuz Fauzy took part in this training for Lotus instead of Heikki Kovalainen . In the second free practice session, in which the drivers were able to drive with slicks, Alonso took the lead in front of Sebastian Vettel and his team-mate Massa.
In the third free practice session on Saturday, the drivers initially used intermediate tires. As the track dried up, the racers drove with slicks in the last third of the training session. Vettel set the fastest lap under these conditions, ahead of Alonso and Webber.
Qualifying
The first section of qualifying was interrupted after an accident by Vitantonio Liuzzi , who lost control of his racing car at the end of the last corner on the start and finish straight and hit the wall. Alonso set the fastest lap in this section. In addition to Liuzzi, the Virgin , HRT and Lotus pilots were eliminated. In the second part of the qualification, Alonso kept the top position. The Toro Rosso and Sauber pilots as well as Sutil, Petrow and Schumacher were eliminated. In the final segment, Vettel secured pole position with two thousandths of a second ahead of Alonso . It was the third pole position that the German achieved in a row. Massa came in third.
run
At the start of the German Grand Prix, Vettel did not get off well. He concentrated on the duel with Alonso, overlooking the fact that Massa overtook both of them with a better start. In addition, Vettel lost the duel against Alonso and took third place behind the two Ferrari drivers. In the parabolic steroids, Hamilton overtook Webber and moved up to fourth place.
Because of collisions, the Force India and Toro Rosso pilots had to pits for repairs after the first lap. For Sébastien Buemi , however, the race was over due to the extent of the damage. The two Toro Rosso drivers collided within the team in the hairpin. After three laps, Jarno Trulli , whose racing car had transmission problems , also had to retire .
While Massa held its own in front of Alonso and Vettel, both Force India pilots had to pit again. At Sutil, a second stop was necessary because his pit crew accidentally fitted three hard and one soft tires at the first stop. In the twelfth lap, Vettel started the pit stops. One lap later, Alonso followed and one lap later, Massa also pitted. However, nothing changed in the order between the three pilots. There was still a change in the lead, as Button drove with a different strategy and stayed out longer. For HRT driver Yamamoto, the race was over after 19 laps.
While Massa was faster than Alonso with the soft tires that he had driven at the start, he could no longer pull away from Alonso with the hard tires. Alonso tried to get past the Brazilian but never made it past. After Button was in the pits, the two Ferraris took the lead again. After Alonso said on the pit radio that he found the situation ridiculous, the gap between the two pilots increased to several seconds. After there was a gap of a few seconds between the two, Alonso managed to reduce the gap again. After 48 laps, Massa's race engineer informed him that Fernando was faster than him and asked him if he had understood this message. A lap later after the hairpin, Massa took off the gas and Alonso pulled past him.
While Lucas di Grassi had to retire with a damaged suspension and Kovalainen had to retire after touching Pedro de la Rosa , Alonso was able to break away from Massa at the front and drove several fastest laps. Vettel caught up with Massa, but was unable to overtake him.
In the end, Alonso won the race ahead of Massa and Vettel. It was Alonso's second win of the season. Hamilton, Button and Webber crossed the finish line behind the first three drivers. The other points went to Kubica, Nico Rosberg , Schumacher and Petrow.
In the World Championship, Hamilton retained the lead over Button and McLaren-Mercedes also retained the top position in the constructors' championship.
After the race there was some discussion about the Ferrari drivers changing places, which was classified as a prohibited stall order. The stewards saw the situation similar and fined Ferrari $ 100,000 for illegal stall orders. In addition, the FIA World Motor Sports Council dealt with the swap of seats at the beginning of September. No further sanctions were adopted. Furthermore, after the race there were discussions about the ban on stall orders per se, with prominent supporters for each side.
