Formula 1 (2007-2014)

Sutil in the Spyker F8-VII , 2007

In 2007 Sutil made his Formula 1 debut for Spyker. The emergency vehicle, the Spyker F8-VII , was called the worst vehicle on the grid even by the team's management staff. Because of this, Sutil and his teammate were usually found at the bottom of the field. In the eleventh Grand Prix in Hungary , Sutil was the first Spyker driver of the season to cross the finish line before an opponent who was still driving. He had overtaken Honda driver Rubens Barrichello at the start of the race and kept him behind him throughout. In the third to last race of the season, the Japanese Grand Prix , he scored his first point in eighth place under rain and his first top 10 position in Formula 1. It was also Spyker's only point and top 10 finish in the 2007 season. Sutil finished the World Cup in 19th place. Within the team, Sutil prevailed against his teammates Christijan Albers , Markus Winkelhock and Sakon Yamamoto , who had shared the second cockpit. In the qualifying duel, Sutil was only defeated by Albers twice and otherwise always won the duel.

Sutil in the Force India VJM01 at the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix

In 2008 the team was taken over by Vijay Mallya and renamed Force India . Sutil's new team-mate became Giancarlo Fisichella . In the sixth race, the Monaco Grand Prix , Sutil started from 18th place in the final phase in fourth place. A collision with Kimi Raikkonen , who had braked in front of the Nouvelle Chicane , ended Sutil's race. Raikkonen then apologized to Sutil. It was Sutil's only chance for points. His best result was a 13th place in the Belgian Grand Prix . The world championship concluded Sutil in 20th place. He was one position behind Fisichella, who had also remained without points, but achieved a better individual placement with tenth place.

Sutil at the 2009 German Grand Prix

In 2009 Force India switched the engine manufacturer from Ferrari to Mercedes . Sutil and Fisichella stayed on the team. At the season opener in Australia Sutil achieved ninth place, for which there were no points this season. Two races later at the Chinese Grand Prix , Sutil was in sixth place in the closing stages and thus on course for points. However, due to aquaplaning, he lost control of his vehicle and retired shortly before the end. Sutil did not score any points in the first twelve races, but was again in the top ten at the European Grand Prix . Fisichella took second place at the Belgian Grand Prix . He left the team after this race and switched to Ferrari. Vitantonio Liuzzi took over his cockpit and was Sutil's new team-mate from the 13th race, the Italian Grand Prix . Sutil initially achieved two best practice times and second place in qualification this weekend. In the race, he crossed the finish line in fourth place behind the two Brawn drivers and Ferrari driver Raikkonen. He also drove the fastest race lap. That was his best Formula 1 result to date. Once again, Sutil caused a stir at the Brazilian Grand Prix . After gaining third place on the grid in qualifying, he collided with Toyota driver Jarno Trulli on the first lap , who tried to overtake him. Both drivers dropped out and Trulli confronted Sutil at the scene of the accident and demanded that Sutil be punished. The stewards decided it was a normal racing incident and punished Trulli for his inappropriate behavior after the collision. Sutil finished 17th in the drivers' championship.

At the 2010 Malaysian Grand Prix, Sutil finished ahead of Hamilton

Also in 2010 Sutil started together with Liuzzi for Force India. At the season opener in Bahrain , he achieved the first training record of the new season. In the race he came home in twelfth place. At the third Grand Prix, the Malaysian Grand Prix, Sutil held McLaren driver Hamilton behind him at the end of the race and scored his first points in fifth. From the fifth to the tenth race, he achieved six points in a row. In the second half of the season Sutil reached the points twice. At the Belgian Grand Prix , he repeated his best result of the season with fifth place. Within the team, Sutil prevailed against Liuzzi and scored more than twice as many points. In the world championship he improved to eleventh place.

In 2011 , Sutil played his fifth Formula 1 season for Force India. Paul di Resta became his new teammate. In Monaco he was in fourth place for several laps and finished in seventh place. At his home Grand Prix in Germany he achieved his best result of the season to date with sixth place, which he repeated at the last race in Brazil . In this race, Sutil drew attention by overtaking Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg . The season ended Sutil in ninth place in the drivers' world championship. It was his best overall result to date. Within the team, Sutil prevailed against di Resta with 42 to 27 points.

Sutil in Force India at the 2013 Malaysian Grand Prix

After five seasons, Sutil and Force India ended their collaboration at the end of 2011. He was replaced by Nico Hulkenberg for the 2012 season . Sutil did not appear in any racing series in 2012.

In the run-up to the 2013 Formula 1 World Championship , Sutil took part in test drives for Force India. A little later he was confirmed as a regular Force India pilot. At the season opener in Australia , Sutil opted for a different strategy and meanwhile led the race from twelfth place. He finished in seventh place. At the Monaco Grand Prix , he finished fifth, which was his best season position. Sutil was in 13th place at the end of the season. Internally he was defeated by di Resta with 29 to 48 points.

Although Sutil had a contract with Force India for the 2014 Formula 1 World Championship , he moved to Sauber . Force India had bought itself out of the contract with Sutil. When the permanent Formula 1 start numbers were introduced, he chose 99, the highest start number for his further career. At the US Grand Prix , Sutil had the best starting position of the season with ninth place. He retired on the first lap of the race after a collision through no fault of his own. So two eleventh places in Australia and Hungary remained his best results. Sutil remained - like his teammate Esteban Gutiérrez - without points. At the end of the season, in eighteenth place, Sutil was the best placed driver who had not scored any points. After the season, Sutil left Sauber. His contract, originally for the 2015 Formula 1 season , has been terminated.

In 2015, Sutil was a reserve driver for Williams . Then he retired from motorsport.
