Yūichi Nakayama ( Japanese 中山 雄 一 , Nakayama Yūichi ; * July 25, 1991 ) is a Japanese racing driver . He became Japanese Formula 3 champion in 2013 . In 2014 and 2015 he drove in the Super Formula .

Career

Nakayama began his motorsport career in karting , in which he was active until 2007. In 2008 he switched to the single-seater racing and raced in the Japanese Formula Challenge . He finished his debut season in 13th place in the drivers' championship. In 2009, Nakayama stayed in the Japanese Formula Challenge. With six podium finishes, he improved to fourth place overall. In 2010, Nakayama completed his third season in the Japanese Formula Challenge. He won ten of twelve races and won the championship with 135 to 56 points ahead of Takamitsu Matsui . In addition, he took part in three races of the Pacific Formula BMW as a guest starter.

In 2011 Nakayama switched to TOM’S in the Japanese Formula 3 championship . He started in an older vehicle and was therefore classified in the national class. In this he reached third place. In 2012, Nakayama received a current vehicle from TOM'S. He won six races - five of them in a row - and finished second in the drivers' championship. With 103 to 118 points he was defeated by Ryō Hirakawa . In 2013 Nakayama contested his third Japanese Formula 3 championship for TOM'S. He started 13 of 15 races. He won eleven races and came second twice. With 146 to 80 points he won the championship dominantly in front of his teammate Takamoto Katsuta . Nakayama also took part in a Super GT race in a GT300 vehicle for apr .

In 2014 Nakayama switched to KCMG in the Super Formula . With a tenth place as the best result, he remained without points. He also competed in a Super GT race for apr. He was together with Morio Nitta and Kōki Saga second in the GT300. In 2015 , Nakayama stayed with KCMG in the Super Formula. He scored points for the first time and was 16th in the drivers' championship with a sixth place as the best result. He also took part in the entire Super GT season with Saga as a team-mate for apr. The two of them won the GT300 classification twice and achieved third place in this.
