João Paulo de Oliveira
João Paulo de Oliveira (born July 13, 1981 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian racing car driver . He became German Formula 3 champion in 2003 and Japanese Formula 3 champion in 2005 . With interruptions he competed in the Super Formula (formerly Formula Nippon ) from 2006 to 2015 , in which he won the championship title in 2010.
Career
João Paulo de Oliveira began his motorsport career in 1997 in kart racing . In 1998 he entered the Brazilian Formula Ford Championship and also drove some races in the Brazilian Formula Chevrolet. In 1999 he switched to the South American Formula 3 championship . He was twelfth overall and won the B-Class championship title. In 2000 he won five races and was runner-up behind Vitor Meira .
In 2001 de Oliveira moved to Europe and entered the German Formula 3 championship . With a win he ended his first season in seventh place overall. In 2002 he stayed in German Formula 3. He did not win a race that season and finished twelfth in the championship at the end of the season. After the German and French Formula 3 championships were merged to form the Formula 3 Euro Series , de Oliveira stayed in the newly created German Formula 3 Cup . He won 13 of 16 races and dominated the championship. He also took part in some races in the British and Austrian Formula 3 championships.
In 2004 de Oliveira went to Japan for the Japanese Formula 3 Championship and started for the Dome Project . He won six races and was runner-up behind Ronnie Quintarelli . In 2005 he moved to TOM’S and won seven races. He secured the championship title from his teammate Kazuki Nakajima . In 2006 he moved to Yellow Hat Hasemi Motorsport in the Japanese Super GT and formed a driver duo with Naoki Yokomizo . The two finished the season in 15th place overall. He also took part in a Formula Nippon race for the 5ZIGEN team. In 2007 de Oliveira switched to Kondo Racing and finished eighth in Formula Nippon with a third place as the best result. He also competed for Kondo Racing together with Seiji Ara in the Super GT and finished tenth with one win. In 2008 he won his first race in Formula Nippon and finished sixth overall. In the Super GT he and Ara achieved 14th place with a win.
In 2009 he left Formula Nippon and initially only started together with Ara for Kondo Racing in the Super GT. The two finished eighth overall with one win. In addition, he made his debut in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) and started in two races of this series, in which he remained without points. In 2010 he returned to Formula Nippon for the Impul team . He won two races and the championship title ahead of André Lotterer . In the Super GT he stayed with Kondo Racing and got a new team-mate in Hironobu Yasuda . With one victory, the two took tenth place in the drivers' championship. In 2011 de Oliveira stayed with Team Impul in Formula Nippon. He won the Motegi race and finished the season in third place overall. He also won a Formula Nippon race that was not part of the championship. In the Super GT, de Oliveira also switched to Team Impul and formed a driver duo with Tsugio Matsuda . The two won a race and finished fifth overall. In addition, de Oliveira made his debut in 2011 for Conquest Racing in the IndyCar Series at the Japanese race in Motegi.
In 2012 de Oliveira competed again for the Impul team in Formula Nippon. Matsuda also became his teammate here. With one win and a total of three podium finishes, he finished the season in fifth place overall. Internally, he prevailed against Matsuda with 34.5 to 20 points. In addition, de Oliveira remained active for the Impul team in the Super GT. With a win he finished fourth overall with Matsuda. In 2013 de Oliveira started in the Super Formula - the new name of the former Formula Nippon - for the Impul team. He was again fifth overall. Internally, he held his own against de Oliveira with 19 to 18.5 points. In the Super GT, de Oliveira and Matsuda won a race for Impul and finished ninth in the overall standings.
In 2014 , de Oliveira won three Super Formula races for Impul. This made him the driver with the most wins. In the championship he was defeated by Kazuki Nakajima with 39.5 to 46 points and was second overall. Internally, he clearly prevailed against his new team-mate Narain Karthikeyan , who was 13th in the drivers' standings with five points. In the Super GT, he again formed a driver duo with Yasuda. They both won once and finished sixth in the overall classification. 2015 was Andrea Caldarelli de Oliveira's teammate at Impul in the Super Formula. With a win he finished the season in fourth place overall and thus clearly prevailed against Caldarelli, who was 14th. In addition, de Oliveira was again active in the Super GT together with Yasuda. The two achieved second place in the drivers' championship.
