background
After the Japanese Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 114 points from Jenson Button and 122 points from Fernando Alonso . Vettel was already prematurely known as world champion. Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 130 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 226 points ahead of Ferrari .
At Force India , there was a change in the shareholder prior to this Grand Prix. The Indian company Sahara India Pariwar took over 42.5% of the shares. Team boss Vijay Mallya reduced his share from 50% to 42.5% and the Dutch Mol family from 50% to 15%.
At the Korean Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with soft (yellow) and supersoft (red) tire compounds , as well as intermediates (light blue) and full wets (orange) for wet conditions .
Alonso was the only winner to date at this Grand Prix.
McLaren celebrated its 700th Formula 1 start at this Grand Prix, and Sauber its 250th.
training
The first free practice took place under rainy conditions, which is why there was little driving. Michael Schumacher achieved the fastest lap time under these conditions, ahead of Vettel and Paul di Resta . Jean-Éric Vergne took over the Toro Rosso from Jaime Alguersuari in this training session and was used for the first time on a Grand Prix weekend. In addition, Karun Chandhok took over the Lotus from Jarno Trulli and Narain Karthikeyan took over the HRT from Vitantonio Liuzzi . The second free practice took place again on a wet track. Although some drivers switched to the super-soft tires at the end of practice, the fastest laps were achieved on intermediates. Lewis Hamilton was the fastest pilot ahead of his teammates Button and Vettel. In the third free practice, Button took first position in front of Hamilton and Mark Webber . Jérôme D'Ambrosio and Liuzzi never achieved a time within the 107 percent rule in any training session .
Qualifying
Hamilton posted the best time in the first section of qualifying. Daniel Ricciardo did not score any time and therefore failed to qualify. He was subsequently admitted to the race. Alongside him, Liuzzi, the Virgin and Lotus pilots and Rubens Barrichello were eliminated. In the second section, Hamilton retained the leadership position. The Sauber and Toro Rosso pilots as well as Pastor Maldonado , Bruno Senna and Schumacher were eliminated. In the final segment, Hamilton was again the fastest and achieved pole position . It was the first time since the 2010 Brazilian Grand Prix that a Red Bull-Renault was not on pole position. Vettel and Button followed in second and third place.
run
Vettel won the Grand Prix ahead of Hamilton and Webber. Starting from second place, Vettel took the lead from Hamilton in the early stages of the race and then stayed in front of him. Exceptionally for a Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel drove the fastest lap of the race in the last race lap.
Red Bull-Renault won the constructors' world championship prematurely in this race.
