Reports

background

After the Korean Grand Prix , Fernando Alonso led the drivers' standings with 11 points ahead of Mark Webber and 21 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 27 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 52 points ahead of Ferrari .

HRT-Cosworth replaced, as previously at the Singapore Grand Prix , Sakon Yamamoto by Christian Klien .

With Michael Schumacher (four times), Felipe Massa (twice) and Webber (once) three former winners competed for this Grand Prix.

training

In the first practice session on Friday, Sebastian Vettel set the fastest lap ahead of his teammates Webber and Hamilton. At Virgin-Cosworth , Jérôme D'Ambrosio took over the cockpit from Lucas di Grassi for this training . In the second free practice session, Vettel kept the lead over Webber. Alonso finished third. The third free practice took place under wet track conditions. At first the pilots used rain tires, at the end of the training the pilots drove on intermediates. Robert Kubica coped best with the track conditions and set the fastest lap. Vettel was second ahead of Hamilton.

Qualifying

Qualifying took place under wet conditions. In the first segment, the pilots used intermediate tires. Alonso achieved the fastest lap under these conditions. The HRT, Virgin and Lotus pilots as well as Adrian Sutil were eliminated. Webber took the lead in the second leg of qualifying, when the rain stopped. The Sauber and Toro Rosso pilots as well as Vitantonio Liuzzi , Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button were eliminated. After a try on intermediate tires, the drivers switched to dry tires in the third section. Nico Hülkenberg coped best with the conditions and achieved pole position with a lead of over a second over second-placed Vettel. Webber finished third. It was the first pole position in Hülkenberg's Formula 1 career.

run

Hülkenberg, who started the race from pole position for the first time, lost the lead at the start and was overtaken by Vettel. A little later, Vettel's team-mate Webber also managed to drive past Hülkenberg. In the second lap, Alonso first tried to drive past Hamilton in front of the Senna-S , but Hamilton initially retained the lead. A little later he did not come through a curve optimally and Alonso drove past him.

After Klien started the race three laps late, Alonso put pressure on third-placed Hulkenberg. In the seventh lap, the Ferrari driver finally managed to take third place from Hülkenberg. In the meantime, he had lost to the leading Red Bull drivers in about ten seconds. In the following laps, Hamilton put Hulkenberg under pressure. In contrast to Alonso, however, he did not manage to overtake him.

The first pit stop phase was started by Button. After Button's direct competitors had made their pit stops, it turned out that coming in early was an advantage and Button had won several positions. For Massa, the pit stop at his home race was not ideal. First he lost a position to Button and had to pit a second lap later because of problems with his right front wheel. Hamilton only stopped a few laps after Hulkenberg and got past him with this strategy. He came back on the track right in front of his teammate, but distanced himself from Button. Shortly afterwards, the leading drivers also pitted to change. Vettel lost his lead to Webber for two laps.

Meanwhile, both McLaren drivers managed to drive past Kamui Kobayashi , whose strategy included a later stop. The two were behind Vettel, Webber and Alonso in fourth and fifth place. In addition to Massa, Rubens Barrichello also had problems at his home Grand Prix and had to pit again after touching Jaime Alguersuari , whose front wing damaged Barrichello's tires. Di Grassi also had problems in this race and had to stand in the pits for several laps. He finally crossed the finish line outside of the classification.

After an accident by Liuzzi in the Senna-S , the safety car had to go out on the track. Various drivers used the safety car phase to change tires. In the lead lap, however, there were only seven drivers left, of whom Hamilton, Button and Rosberg had fresh tires. Since some pilots were lapped, the pilots were not directly behind one another in the lead lap and so there were no shifts at the front of the field during the restart. However, Schumacher, who was not in the pits, let his team mate, who had new tires, pass in order to enable a good result for the team.

While there were no further changes of position in the front part of the field, Massa tried to make up positions in the rear part of the field. He lost positions after duels with Sébastien Buemi and Barrichello. However, since the Ferrari driver was not in the points, nothing changed in his points yield.

Finally, Vettel won the race ahead of Webber and Alonso. Hamilton was fifth ahead of Button. Alonso thus retained the lead in the drivers' championship ahead of Webber and Vettel. Besides the three pilots, Hamilton was the only pilot who also had a chance of winning the world title. As announced, the Red Bull drivers decided not to swap positions at the end of the race, which would have given Webber better chances of winning the title. For Button it was clear after the race that he would not be able to defend his title this season. The other points went to Rosberg, Schumacher, Hülkenberg, Kubica and Kobayashi.

Red Bull-Renault won the constructors' world championship early due to the double victory. It was the first title win for the racing team, which entered Formula 1 in 2005 .
