Timo Glock (born March 18, 1982 in Lindenfels ) is a German automobile racing driver .

He made his Formula 1 debut in 2004 and initially took part in four Grand Prix races. In 2005 he competed in the Champ Car series and then spent two years in the GP2 series , in which he won the championship title in 2007. From 2008 to 2012 Glock was again active in Formula 1. In two years at Toyota , he reached tenth world championship rank twice. He has been competing for BMW teams in the DTM since 2013 .

Career

Beginnings in motorsport (1996-2003)

Glock began his motorsport career in motocross in 1996 . In 1997 he switched to karting , which he operated until 1999. After switching to formula racing, he drove in the junior class of the German Formula BMW in 2000 and became a champion straight away. A year later he also won the championship title of the German Formula BMW straight away. In 2002 Glock switched to the German Formula 3 championship . With three wins, Glock came third in the overall standings and was also the best newcomer. In 2003 , Glock switched to the newly founded Formula 3 Euro Series and finished fifth overall with three wins.

Formula 1 (2004)

In 2004 he made it to Formula 1 , where he became a test and reserve driver for the Jordan racing team at the start of the season . He made his racing debut on June 13, 2004 at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montréal , after regular regular driver Giorgio Pantano was unable to start because his sponsors failed to keep financial commitments. This made Glock the fourth German Formula 1 driver at the start of a Grand Prix in the 2004 season, alongside Michael Schumacher , Ralf Schumacher and Nick Heidfeld . He finished 7th on his debut, for which he got two championship points. For the next races, Pantano returned to the Jordan cockpit and Glock again took on the role of test and reserve driver. Three races before the end of the season, Pantano lost the cockpit again and Glock started again for Jordan. This time he couldn't get any more points. For 2005 he lost his Formula 1 cockpit because of the difficult financial situation of the Jordan team, which for 2005 was dependent on sponsorship donations from its drivers.

ChampCars (2005)

In the absence of a Formula 1 alternative, Glock switched to the American Champ Car World Series for Team Rocketsports Racing in 2005 . He made it onto the podium in second place in Montréal and was named Rookie of the Year after the season .

GP2 series (2006-2007)

Glock in the GP2 series , Monaco 2007

In 2006 , Glock started the GP2 series , which had been newly founded a year earlier , in order to recommend itself again for a Formula 1 cockpit via this detour. There, however, he initially drove with moderate success for the Spanish BCN Competición team, which often had to struggle with technical problems. Glock therefore switched to the British iSport team during the current season in order to live up to his ambitions to win. In fact, he developed in the second half of the season into a challenger to the eventual champion Lewis Hamilton and finished fourth in the championship with two wins. In 2007 , Glock stayed with iSport in the GP2 series to win the championship. Despite his clear superiority in the meantime, he had to fear winning the title until the last race, as he repeatedly lost important points due to technical defects and accidents through no fault of his own. Only with a convincing victory in the last race of the season in Valencia did Glock become GP2 champion.

In parallel to his GP2 involvement, Glock returned to Formula 1 in the 2007 season as the second test driver of the BMW-Sauber team, in which he took on the role of the official reserve driver after his team-mate Sebastian Vettel moved to the Toro Rosso Formula 1 racing team took over.

With the GP2 title as a recommendation, Glock started looking for a regular cockpit for the 2008 Formula 1 season . In October 2007 Toyota Racing offered him a contract, but BMW Sauber wanted to keep him as a test and reserve driver. After an arbitration decision by the Contract Recognition Board (CRB), Toyota finally confirmed Glock's commitment for two years plus an option in November 2007.

Formula 1 (2008-2012)

Toyota (2008-2009)

Glock in the Toyota TF108 in Malaysia 2008

Glock was one of five German drivers who competed in Formula 1 in 2008. He is also the third driver, after Nico Rosberg and Hamilton, to gain direct promotion to Formula 1 as the reigning GP2 champion. Glock celebrated the greatest success in his first season at the Hungarian Grand Prix on the Hungaroring , where he finished second behind the Finn Heikki Kovalainen . He came into the public eye at the season finale in Interlagos , where he was overtaken in the penultimate corner of the last lap by Briton Lewis Hamilton, who was one point ahead of Brazilian Felipe Massa . The South American's home fans then assumed Glock's intention and insulted the German.

In the drivers' championship, Glock finished tenth with 25 points at the end of the season - just behind his experienced team-mate Jarno Trulli , who scored 31 points.

In the 2009 season , Glock, who had stayed with Toyota, finished third in the second race in Malaysia . Since the race was ended prematurely and less than 75% of the race distance was completed, only half points were awarded. As the season progressed, Glock scored more points and drove the first and so far only fastest race lap of his career at the European Grand Prix . At the Singapore Grand Prix he took second place, his best result of the season so far. In qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix , Glock had an accident when he hit a tire wall, causing a cut on his leg that had to be sewn. He was unable to compete in the race the following day. Glock did not start in Abu Dhabi either. Even before the end of the season, rumors were circulating that Glock would have to look around for a new cockpit because Toyota had not taken the existing option on its services. In fact, on November 4, 2009, the Toyota board of directors announced the immediate withdrawal of its works team from Formula 1, which made Glock's further obligation obsolete.

Virgin / Marussia (2010-2012)

Glock in the Virgin at the 2010 season opener in Bahrain

On November 17, 2009, the 2010 Formula 1 debut team Manor Grand Prix announced the commitment of Glock. In December, the team announced that it would be renamed Virgin Racing . Glock's teammate was the Brazilian Lucas di Grassi , who was Glock's greatest competitor for the GP2 title in 2007. After Virgin was plagued by technical problems during the test drives before the season, Glock was also eliminated in the first two races with technical defects. He was unable to finish the third race in Malaysia because of a collision with his former team-mate Trulli. In the fourth race, the Virgin driver did not even manage to start the race after stopping on the grid. After all, Glock reached the finish line for the first time in 18th place at the European opener in Spain . At the end of the season, with a 14th place as the best result, he finished 23rd in the overall standings.

In 2011 , Glock stayed with Virgin. He finished the season with two 15th places as the best results in 25th place overall. He was one position behind his teammate Jérôme D'Ambrosio , who however lost the race duel to Glock with 9:10. In 2012 his team changed the chassis name and entered the Marussia F1 Team . After the new car, the Marussia MR01 , was not finished in time before the season and could not be tested, it crossed the finish line in 14th place at the season opener in Australia . At the European Grand Prix , Glock was unable to take part in the race due to an intestinal infection. At the Singapore Grand Prix , Glock achieved his best result for Marussia with twelfth place. At the end of the season he finished 20th in the drivers' championship.

In July 2011, Glock signed a three-year contract with Marussia until the end of the 2014 season. At the beginning of 2013, however, a mutual agreement termination was announced, which ended Glock's time at Marussia after three years. Marussia justified this step with economic circumstances.

DTM (since 2013)

Team MTEK (2013-2015)

Timo Glock in the DTM at Hockenheim 2014

After leaving Formula 1, Glock signed a contract with BMW for the DTM for the 2013 season . With that he switched from formula to touring cars . He received a cockpit with the MTEK team . In his third DTM race he achieved a podium finish with a third place. This remained his only top 10 placement until the last race of the season at Hockenheim , where he achieved his first DTM victory. Glock finished his first season in the DTM with 40 points in ninth place. He was one position behind his teammate Marco Wittmann , who had scored 49 points.

In 2014 Glock completed his second DTM season for MTEK. With António Félix da Costa he got a new teammate. His best result was a third place in Spielberg . In the overall standings, Glock finished 16th with 33 points at the end of the season.

Also in 2015 remained at Glock Mtek. Bruno Spengler joined the team instead of Félix da Costa . He chose 16 as his starting number. In Oschersleben , he achieved his first pole position in the DTM on Saturday and also won the race. He finished the season in 15th place overall.

Reinhold Motorsport (since 2016)

For the 2016 season, Glock moved to Reinhold Motorsport in the BMW squad and became Wittmann's team-mate again. After retiring from the first race at the season opener in Hockenheim, he finished second in the Sunday race. However, he was disqualified after the race due to an incorrectly fitted tailgate on his BMW. On the following race weekend in Spielberg, he achieved his only win of the season on Sunday. While Wittmann won the drivers' championship, Glock achieved tenth place overall at the end of the season.

In 2017 , Wittmann and Glock stayed with Reinhold and received a third team-mate in Augusto Farfus, who had been transferred from MTEK . In the opening race at the Hockenheimring, he achieved second place. In the second race at Hockenheim he achieved pole position, but he could not hold this position in the race and finished eighth. In Saturday's race in Mogyoród , he finished second again on the podium. At Zandvoort he achieved his fourth DTM victory on Saturday, having achieved his third pole position the day before. At the Saturday race of the season finale in Hockenheim he achieved his fourth podium of the current season when he was third. In the overall standings, he was the second-best BMW driver and came seventh behind Wittmann.

At the start of the 2018 season, he achieved third place at Hockenheim. After winning the second race the following day, he took the overall lead in the DTM for the first time. At the Saturday race at the Lausitzring , he achieved the third podium finish in the third race of the season with a second place on Saturday. In Mogyoród he achieved another podium finish in second place on Sunday. At the season finale, Glock finished third on the podium for the fifth time this year. He finished the season in fifth place in the drivers' championship.

In December 2018, Glock was confirmed as a BMW driver for 2019 . For the first time in a complete DTM season he was unable to place on the podium. His best results were two fourth places in the first and last races of the season at Hockenheim. With 58 points, he finished the season in twelfth place in the overall standings.
