Lucas Auer (born September 11, 1994 in Tyrol ) is an Austrian racing car driver . He won the championship title in the JK Racing Asia Series in 2011 . In 2012 he was runner-up in German Formula 3 . In 2013 and 2014 he started in the European Formula 3 championship . From 2015 to 2018 he competed for Mercedes in the DTM .

Career

Beginnings in karting (2001-2010)

Auer began his motorsport career in karting in 2001 at the age of seven . In his first two years he drove in the Tyrolean kart championship, which he finished with second place (2001) and the championship title (2002). In 2003 he switched to the Bavarian Kart Championship, which he finished with eighth place. From 2004 to 2007 he drove in the German DMV Kart Championship. There he rose from fourth place in 2004 to second in 2005 and finally won the championship in this series in 2006 and 2007.

In 2009 and 2010 he competed in the German Junior Kart Championship , which he finished in 2010 with second place behind Christian Sørensen .

Formula racing (2011-2014)

In 2011 Auer switched to formula racing in the JK Racing Asia Series , the successor series to the Pacific Formula BMW , at EuroInternational . He won 7 out of 18 races and was only off the podium once. With 292 to 285 points, he won the championship before Afiq Ikhwan Yazid . He also took part in two races of the Formula Pilota China Series and achieved a podium finish. After the season, Auer took part in test drives in the German Formula 3 Cup for Van Amersfoort Racing in Valencia from December 12th to 14th .

At the beginning of 2012 Auer competed in the Toyota Racing Series , the highest monoposto series in New Zealand, for Giles Motorsport . He started the first two races from pole position , but failed to cross the finish line on both occasions and thus fell back in the overall standings. In the following races he achieved better results and finally finished the last seven races within the first five drivers. A second place was his best result. While his team-mates Nick Cassidy and Hannes van Asseldonk occupied the first two positions, Auer finished the season as the third-best driver of his team in sixth place in the drivers' standings. He also won the rookie title . Auer then took part in the 2012 German Formula 3 Cup for Van Amersfoort Racing. Auer won two races and was on the podium eleven times. With 298 to 408 he was defeated by Jimmy Eriksson and was runner-up as the best newcomer. In addition, he made three guest starts for Van Amersvoort Racing in the Formula 3 Euro Series and took part in the Macau Grand Prix .

At the beginning of the 2013 season , Auer started again for Giles Motorsport in the New Zealand Toyota Racing Series. In the meantime, Auer led the overall standings with two wins. At the end of the season he was third overall with a total of six podium finishes. He then competed in the European Formula 3 championship in 2013 for the Prema Powerteam , the master racing team from the previous year. With a win and nine further podium finishes, Auer finished the season fourth in the overall standings. He lost to Raffaele Marciello and Alex Lynn within the team . In addition, debuted Auer in 2013 in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and took for by Kodewa supervised Lotus part in a race in the LMP2 class team.

In 2014 Auer switched to Mücke Motorsport within the European Formula 3 championship . He won three races and was on the podium of another ten. As the best driver of his team, he was again fourth in the drivers' championship. He also finished second behind his team-mate Felix Rosenqvist at the Macau Grand Prix . In addition, Auer started three races in the LMP1 class for Lotus in the 2014 WEC. He was 24th in the driver's world championship.

DTM (2015-2018)

ART Grand Prix (2015)

For the 2015 season, Auer switched to the DTM . He received a Mercedes cockpit at the ART Grand Prix and chose 22 as his starting number. After a moderate start to the season, he was able to score points for the first time in the Sunday race in Nuremberg . He achieved his first pole position in the DTM at the Nürburgring . At the end of the season he finished 23rd overall as the worst Mercedes driver.

Mücke Motorsport (2016)

For the 2016 DTM season , Auer returned to Mücke Motorsport through a move within the Mercedes team. In Sunday's race at the Lausitzring , he scored his first DTM victory from pole position, which was also the only victory for Mücke Motorsport in the DTM. He achieved another pole position at the Nürburgring and finished second on the podium in the race. He finished the season in twelfth place in the drivers' championship.

HWA (2017-2018)

Because Mücke left the DTM at the end of 2016 due to the reduction in the number of vehicles per manufacturer from eight to six, Auer competed for HWA in 2017 . At the opening race in Hockenheim he achieved his second DTM victory and thus took the lead in the overall standings for the first time. With another victory on the following race weekend in Lausitz, he kept it until the sixth race in Mogyoród , where he had to hand it over to René Rast . In the further course of the season Auer was only rarely able to build on his performance at the beginning of the year, but he scored his third win of the season at the Nürburgring. At the end of the year, he finished sixth in the overall standings as the best Mercedes driver.

In 2018 Auer stayed at HWA. At the beginning of the season he finished second on the podium at Hockenheim and achieved a pole position at the Lausitzring. He also came second in Saturday's race on the Hungaroring . In Zandvoort and Brands Hatch , he achieved further podium positions - each in third place in Saturday's races. At the end of the season he was in seventh place in the drivers' standings.

Super Formula (2019)

In December 2018 it was announced that Lucas Auer would be competing in the Japanese Super Formula Championship for the B-Max Racing Team in the 2019 season . After Mercedes left the DTM at the end of the 2018 season, the Austrian no longer had a cockpit. The B-Max Racing Team is part of the Red Bull junior program. In the race at Sportsland SUGO , Auer was able to achieve the only podium in third place. He also drove the fastest race lap there. He finished the season in ninth place overall. In December 2019 it was announced that Auer is no longer part of the Red Bull junior program.

Return to the DTM (from 2020)

After a season in the Japanese Super Formula Championship, Lucas Auer is returning to the DTM. He will drive one of the six BMW M4 DTMs in the 2020 season .

Personal

Lucas Auer is the nephew of the former Formula 1 racing driver Gerhard Berger . He is the son of Berger's sister Claudia, who runs a transport company in Wörgl in Tyrol.
