After the opening weekend at Hockenheim , Lucas Auer led the drivers' standings by 14 points each over Jamie Green and Gary Paffett . In the brand classification, Mercedes led with 13 points ahead of Audi and with 52 points ahead of BMW .

With Paffett (three times), Mattias Ekström , Green, Bruno Spengler (twice each), Auer and Paul di Resta (once each), six former Klettwitz winners competed in the races.

Friday

In the first practice session on late Friday afternoon, Mike Rockenfeller set the fastest lap in 1: 17.278 minutes. This placed him ahead of Ekström and Robert Wickens , who were second and third.

Saturday

In the second practice session on Saturday morning, overall leader Auer drove the fastest lap in 1: 16.829 minutes. Behind them were Wickens and Green.

In qualifying for the race on Saturday, Auer stayed in front and achieved pole position in 1: 16.193 minutes ahead of Wickens and BMW driver Maxime Martin , who again came second . The green originally placed eleventh and second in the championship was taken out of the qualifying because he had used a tire from his team-mate René Rast and had to start the race from last place on the grid.

At the start of the race, the top three Auer, Wickens and Martin were able to hold their positions. At the beginning of the third lap, Martin was able to overtake Wickens. A little later, Loïc Duval was given a five-second stop-and-go penalty for a jump start .

After five laps, Green was the first driver to come into the pits for a tire change. Tom Blomqvist followed him six laps later . Immediately afterwards, on lap 14, there was a collision between Blomqvist and di Resta, who had just driven out of the pit lane and braked himself because of the new and not yet warmed up tires. Di Resta was punished with a drive-through penalty as the cause of the collision and Blomqvist's spin . Blomqvist fell back to the bottom of the field.

After lap 16, Wickens, the first driver from the leading group, came into the pits, followed by Martin on the lap that followed. Another lap later, Auer also changed tires, which meant that Rast temporarily took the lead. On the same lap, Wickens had already managed to get past Martin again. In the "adjusted" order of the drivers who had already completed their mandatory pit stop, Auer was ahead of Wickens and Martin. After lap 24 Rast came into the pits and passed the lead on to Mercedes driver Edoardo Mortara , whose brand colleague Maro Engel was behind in second place.

After lap 27, Engel and Mortara a lap later, the last two remaining drivers came to the pits for their mandatory stops. This restored the original sequence with Auer's leadership before Wickens and Martin. At the end of lap 34, Nico Müller had to give up the race due to braking problems in the pits. At the beginning of the 36th lap, Rast managed to get past Martin into third place.

After 43 laps, Auer won the race ahead of Wickens and Rast. For Wickens it was the second DTM victory of the season and the third overall. Rast also made it onto the podium for the first time in the DTM. Rast also set the fastest race lap in 1: 17.343 minutes .

In the overall standings, Auer increased his lead over the new second-placed Paffett (34) and third Rockenfeller (31) with 68 points. With the manufacturers, Mercedes (156) stayed ahead of Audi (109) and BMW (53).

Sunday

Green won the third practice session on Sunday with a time of 1: 16.745 minutes ahead of his brand colleagues Rast and Ekström.

The qualifying and thus the pole position for the second race at the Lausitzring was won by Wickens ahead of Blomqvist and Green.

As on the day before, there were no major changes in position at the start of the Sunday race and the first three winners, Wickens, Blomqvist and Green, were able to hold their positions. Audi drivers Rockenfeller and Ekström came to the pits after the first lap to change their mandatory tires. On lap two, Blomqvist received a five-second stop-and-go penalty for a jump start.

On lap four, Blomqvist first had to let Green and shortly afterwards Paffett, who was behind him, pull past him. As a result, front runners Wickens and Green were able to set themselves apart from the rest of the field. After lap twelve, Paffett, who was third at the time, drove to the pits and fell back to 14th place. It was similar for Blomqvist, who two laps later, also due to his stop-and-go penalty, only came back on the track in 17th place. Another lap later, Wickens came into the pits and gave Green the lead.

In the meantime, Ekström and Rockenfeller, who had stopped early, gained positions in the "adjusted" order of the drivers who had already made their stops. After lap 16, Green also completed this, Müller temporarily took the lead. Wickens managed to drive past Green again. After lap 25, Müller, Auer and Engel were the last drivers to pits. As a result, Wickens took the lead again in “reality”, ahead of Green and Ekström. However, this only lasted for a short time, as Green passed Wickens in turn one at the beginning of lap 31. In lap 38, Wickens also lost second position to Ekström at the same point.

After 55 minutes and an additional lap, Green won the race ahead of Ekström and Wickens. For Green it was the second season and 14th career victory in the DTM. As on the previous day, 43 laps had been completed. Five Audi drivers were among the top seven, the entire field was within 44 seconds, and all drivers saw the checkered flag. The fastest race lap was Rast, just like the day before, this time in 1: 17.098 minutes.

In the drivers' championship, Auer remained first with 69 points, ahead of Green (53), who moved back to second place with his victory, and Paffett (46). In the manufacturers' standings, Mercedes (187) remained ahead of Audi (177) and BMW (61).
