Bruno Spengler (born August 23, 1983 in Schiltigheim , France ) is a Canadian automobile racing driver . He has been driving in the DTM since 2005, for Mercedes-Benz from 2005 to 2011 and for BMW since 2012 . In 2006 and 2007 he won the runner-up title in this series, and in 2012 he became DTM champion.

Career

Beginnings in motorsport (1993-2004)

Like most motorsport enthusiasts , Spengler began his career in karting , where he was active from 1993 to 2000. Although his family moved to Canada when he was three years old and accordingly went to school in Canada, he did motorsport in both Canada and France. Among other things, Spengler won the French elite championship in 2000. In 2001 he switched to formula racing and started for Graff Racing both in the French Formula Renault , in which he finished fifth overall with a victory, and in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup , in which he was ninth with a race win. In 2002 Spengler went to Jenzer Motorsport , for which he competed in the German Formula Renault and the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. In the German Formula Renault he was runner- up with three wins behind Christian Klien, ahead of his team-mate Esteban Guerrieri . In the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup he did not win a race, but he still improved to eighth place in the overall standings. A highlight of the season was his participation in the FranAm Formula Renault , in which he dominated the championship with six wins from seven races.

In 2003 Spengler switched to the newly founded Formula 3 Euro Series for the French ASM racing team . Due to injury, he did not take part in the first three race weekends. As the best placement, he achieved a second place and finished tenth overall at the end of the season. In 2004 he played his second season in the Formula 3 Euro Series for Mücke Motorsport and became a teammate of Robert Kubica . Spengler mostly did not keep up with his teammates and at the end of the season finished eleventh overall with third place as the best result, while Kubica was seventh with almost twice as many points.

DTM (since 2005)

Persson Motorsport (2005)

In 2005 Spengler left formula racing and switched to touring car racing in the DTM . As a team-mate of Jamie Green , he started for Persson Motorsport in a Mercedes-Benz car from last year . After getting off to a poor start to the season, he scored his first points in the DTM in sixth place in the ninth race of the season at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz . At the end of his first season, he finished 16th overall.

HWA (2006–2011)

Spengler in the DTM Mercedes-Benz of the 2006 season

In 2006 he switched to the Mercedes-Benz works team HWA , which this season also fielded Green, Bernd Schneider and Mika Häkkinen in addition to Spengler , and received a current racing car. Only at the season opener in Hockenheim did he not score any points. After finishing second in Oschersleben , he won his first DTM race at the Norisring . Further victories followed at the Nürburgring , Le Mans and at the season finale in Hockenheim. Although no other driver won more than two races, Spengler had to admit defeat to his teammate Schneider, who had scored 71 points, with 63 points at the end of the season.

In 2007 Spengler played his third season in the DTM for HWA, which this season had the same driver line-up as last year. After he had not scored any points in the first two races, he was always among the top five drivers as the season progressed. At the Norisring, he won the race again. At the end of the season, as the best Mercedes-Benz driver, he lost the championship title by just three points to Audi driver Mattias Ekström , who like Spengler had only won one race, and was runner-up in the DTM for the second time.

Spengler at the 2009 season opener at the Hockenheimring

In 2008 Spengler stayed at HWA again and got a new team-mate in Paul di Resta , who was signed to replace Häkkinen. Compared to previous years, Spengler did not win any races this season and had to be satisfied with second place at the Norisring as the best result. At the end of the season he was the third-best Mercedes driver behind di Resta and Green, fifth overall.

Another DTM season followed in the following year , in which Spengler did not win. He started again for HWA, which had replaced Schneider and Green with Gary Paffett and Ralf Schumacher this season . With three podium finishes, he improved to fourth overall at the end of the season. As in the previous year, this time behind Paffett and di Resta, he was the third-best Mercedes-Benz driver.

In 2010 Spengler contested his sixth DTM season for HWA. With two second places at the start of the season, he took the lead in the drivers' championship after the second race. In the third race at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz, he maintained his championship lead with his first victory in almost three years. Another victory followed at the Nürburgring. After a retirement in the ninth race, he had to hand over the lead to his team-mate di Resta. One race later, he took the lead again and led the drivers' standings before the last race in Shanghai . After finishing 17th in qualifying, he crossed the finish line in 13th place in the race. Since his teammate Paffett won the race and di Resta finished second, he lost the championship title to di Resta and was third behind Paffett in the championship.

In 2011 Spengler stayed with HWA. Spengler started the season with a win at the season opener in Hockenheim. His second win of the season followed at the Norisring. He finished a total of five races on the podium. After leading the championship for half a season, he finally finished third as the best Mercedes driver. He also won a DTM show race in the Munich Olympic Stadium .

Schnitzer Motorsport (2012-2014)

Bruno Spengler in the DTM at Hockenheim 2014

After seven years at Mercedes, Spengler moved to the DTM returnees BMW in 2012 . He drove for Schnitzer Motorsport , his teammate was DTM newcomer Dirk Werner . In the second race of the season at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz, he won for BMW for the first time. It was also the first victory for BMW in the “new” DTM, which has been held since 2000. After two further podium finishes, further victories followed at the Nürburgring and in Oschersleben. Spengler went into the season finale in Hockenheim in second place overall. Spengler won this race and thus achieved his first overall DTM victory. With 149 to 145 points, he narrowly prevailed against Mercedes driver Paffett, who was in the lead until the season finale.

In 2013 , Spengler competed again as defending champion for Schnitzer with Werner as a team-mate. After finishing second at Brands Hatch, Spengler won the third race of the season in Spielberg. With a third place he achieved another podium placement. Spengler came third in the overall standings, one place behind Augusto Farfus, the second best BMW driver.

In 2014 Spengler contested his third season for Schnitzer in the DTM. With Martin Tomczyk he got an ex-champion as a teammate. He achieved two podium finishes and finished the season in eleventh place in the overall standings. For the first time since his debut season in 2005 he was not among the top five in the drivers' standings.

Team MTEK (2015-2016)

In 2015 Spengler switched to MTEK within the BMW team , where he became Timo Glock's teammate . As the starting number, he chose 7. As the best BMW driver and best driver without a win, he achieved fifth place overall. In addition, he competed for BMW teams in individual races of the ADAC GT Masters , Blancpain Endurance Series and the United SportsCar Championship (USCC).

In the DTM season 2016 Spengler remained - now with Augusto Farfus  - at Mtek. With a third place as the best result, he finished the season in 15th place in the drivers' standings.

Racing Bart Mampaey (2017-2018)

After MTEK had left the DTM in the course of reducing the number of vehicles from eight to six vehicles per manufacturer, Spengler switched to Racing Bart Mampaey as a team-mate of Tom Blomqvist and Maxime Martin for the 2017 season . In the Saturday race in Mogyoród he achieved his first podium finish of the season in third place and at the Norisring his first race win in over four years. In Wolokolamsk , he finished third on the podium again. He finished the season with 75 points in 13th place overall.

In 2018 Spengler stayed with Mampaey. With Philipp Eng and Joel Eriksson he got two debutants as new teammates. At the Saturday race at the Nürburgring, he achieved his only podium finish in second place this year. He finished twelfth in the drivers' championship.

Reinhold Motorsport (2019)

For the 2019 DTM season , Spengler moved to Reinhold Motorsport within the BMW team , where he became team-mate of Timo Glock and Marco Wittmann . He achieved his first win of the season on Sunday in Nuremberg. After eight of 18 races in which he was always able to classify himself in the points, he finished fourth in the overall ranking.
