The German Touring Car Championship 1993 was the tenth season of the DTM . The first run took place on April 4, 1993 at the Circuit Zolder and the season finale took place on September 19 at the Hockenheimring . The two races of the invitation race in Donington on July 18 did not count towards the DTM championship.

A total of 22 races were held in Germany , Belgium and Great Britain . Two runs took place on each of the 11 race weekends.

Overall winner was Nicola Larini in an Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI with 261 points.

history

Regulations

After ten years of classless regulation, in which an attempt was made to equate the different wagons with the help of different basic weights, "Class 1" was introduced for 1993. The key data stipulated that all cars used may use a maximum of one 2.5-liter engine with six cylinders. On this basis, the engine, chassis and aerodynamics could be extensively modified. Together with the ITR , the manufacturers Mercedes-Benz , Opel , Alfa Romeo , Audi and BMW worked out the extremely expensive regulations. However, the fact that none of the manufacturers really agreed with the rules later issued by the ITR brought the DTM almost to an end. BMW announced early on that under these circumstances they were leaving the factory with immediate effect, as the previously decided abolition of the braking of superior brands was reactivated. The chairman of the marketing department Karl-Heinz Kalbfell at ONS saw the blame for this .

“We wanted a clear formula - but suddenly we have the same handicap regulations again. Are we here in a banana republic? "

- Karl-Heinz Kalbfell : Touring Car Story '93 (page 13)

Shortly after BMW withdrew, the ONS repealed this paragraph. But even this measure did not change the opinion of the people of Munich. Just ten days later, at the ONS championship celebration, Head of Audi Sport Dieter Basche and spokesman Lutz Schilling announced that Audi would also withdraw from the DTM and switch to the French Touring Car Championship .

“Our lawyers have said that the ONS still has the opportunity to intervene. The environment in Germany is too uncertain for us. "

- Dieter Basche : Touring Car Story '93 (page 13)

"This is not a decision against Germany, but for Europe."

- Lutz Schilling : Touring Car Story '93 (page 13)

But in France the initiators of the series decided against the class 1 regulations, so that Audi stopped work on the racing car that had already been developed and tested. After the end of BMW and Audi, Opel now questioned a factory comeback in the DTM. Officially, it was said at Opel that the rejection of qualified competitors did not justify a commitment. Only Mercedes-Benz and Alfa Romeo remain from the five plants. While Alfa Romeo announced that it would drive the series alone if necessary, Mercedes-Benz was also about to throw in the towel.

"Those who demanded the new regulations the loudest are now pinching."

- Norbert Haug : Touring Car Story '93 (page 14)

But Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug was able to persuade his board of directors to stay in the DTM. The DTM was able to start the new season with only ten works cars (four from Alfa Romeo and six from Mercedes-Benz) and numerous privateers. Opel only returned to the DTM at the season finale at the Hockenheimring .

technology

Due to the Class 1 regulations, the DTM 1993 was closer to technology from Group C and Formula 1 than to touring car racing in general. The range of possibilities for the manufacturer was now very wide to create an extraordinary 2.5-liter racing car. The general conditions were that the body should come from a street model, of which at least 25,000 were built in series. The size and position of the rear wing were fixed. There is almost absolute freedom below the wheel hubs. Modifications from race to race could now also be carried out without the need for time-consuming approval applications. For example, the AVUS high-speed track used a different wing system than the long and winding Nordschleife . Conversions could also be carried out during a racing weekend, for example Alfa Romeo built air scoops in the side skirts overnight at the Norisring in order to minimize braking problems through better ventilation. The privateers were also able to benefit from the freedoms, but not to the same extent as the works because of significantly limited financial resources.

The mandatory roll bar was replaced by a monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic . The consumption of the high-performance V6 engines was limited to a maximum of 55 liters per 100 kilometers. Despite the elaborate and complex technology of the engines, they were very stable. There was hardly any engine damage. When it comes to drive, Alfa Romeo relied on the all-wheel drive that had been tested by Audi, while Mercedes-Benz stayed with the tried and tested rear-wheel drive. For Alessandro Nannini, who almost lost a hand in a helicopter crash, a sequential circuit was developed that was equipped with two shift levers. For downshifting, another, smaller lever was attached next to the gear lever, which also only had to be moved up to change to a lower gear. Another advantage of this gearshift were fewer errors when changing gears, so that damage to the transmission and engine was less common. This technique was later adopted for all Alfa Romeos. Opel also equipped its Calibra with this circuit.

"We know from our measurements that Nanini loses time, especially when switching."

- Giorgo Pantana : Touring Car Story '93 (page 28)

Mercedes-Benz and all private drivers in BMW equipped their cars with an anti-lock braking system ; Alfa Romeo was only able to introduce this technology in the 1994 model. Mercedes-Benz also adopted traction control and an active chassis from Formula 1.
