Jürgen Rudolf Feucht (born October 14, 1952 ) is a German automobile racing driver .

Beginnings in professional motorsport

Jürgen Feucht completed vocational training as an engine builder at Gante-Racing, a Darmstadt-based Porsche company . Later he worked for the tuning company Supervettes, which specializes in Chevrolet Corvette engines; at the same time he found his way into automobile sport. After his first rallycross races with a Ford Capri , the 1.96 meter taller than average South Hesse switched to Formula Ford . There he competed against drivers like Stefan Bellof and Volker Weidler . In 1988 and 89, Feucht secured the Special Touring Car Trophy (STT) against a phalanx of Porsche 935 Turbo and BMW M1 with the up to 6,600 cm³ Chevy Corvette from 1968, a former chassis by Mark Donohue .

Feucht was also active in motor boating and held the high-speed record on the Rhine. In 1989 he was commissioned to modify Chevrolet engines for racing by a German powerboat team. Another of his marine engines was based on the Ford Mustang 'big block' . After the latter had been measured on the test bench with 565 hp, Feucht decided in 1991 to enter the German Touring Car Championship (DTM). Originally a Chevrolet Camaro was planned, but Chevrolet refused to enroll in the DTM.

German Touring Car Championship

At this point in time - 1991 - new engine regulations were being discussed, based on a uniform displacement of only 2,500 cc . Jürgen Feucht saw this as an opportunity and planned to bring his knowledge and experience to an existing Ford Mustang DTM chassis, which he took over from Heinz Becker from Hagen on November 1, 1991 - after only one race as good as new . Together with his technical director Robert Voos, he rebuilt the coupé after a test race at the Hockenheimring in late autumn 1991 until the start of the 1992 DTM season and founded his own team under the name Challenger Racing .

But already at the start of series production in Zolder, Belgium, it turned out that the Mustang's tires and rear axles did not harmonize with one another. That is why Feucht changed the tire brand between the first and second races in Zolder . The reliability of the Mustang was also a problem, so that Feucht was unable to complete any of his races in the first year or even not even start in some cases.

The 1993 Ford Mustang

In 1993 Feucht was able to win the lifestyle shoe brand Buffalo Boots as sponsors, which from then on gave the team the name "Buffalo Boots Racing". The problems with the tires from the previous year were largely eliminated with soft 13-inch tires from Goodyear . Feucht's best result in his second season was a 14th place in the airfield race in Diepholz .

In 1994 Feucht registered again for the DTM, but had to accept several setbacks. Goodyear's tire quota was almost exhausted, and the manufacturer did not want to resume production until 100 units were purchased. However, this was out of the question for the Hessian private team. In addition, there was later a fire in the Challenger workshop, in which both the workshop and the Mustang were badly damaged. Feucht could not compete at the start of the season in Hockenheim and had to sit out the next three races. The rest of the season was similar to the previous year: 14th place at the Norisring was the best result of the year.

After three years of service, Jürgen Feucht had to give up his DTM career at the end of the 1994 season because the homologation for the US 5-liter eight-cylinder coupé expired and the car was no longer eligible to compete.

Jürgen Feucht today

Jürgen Feucht remained the owner of the Ford Mustang GT 5.0. In 2009, 15 years after the last DTM outing, he put it back into operation - Jürgen Feucht and Robert Voos invested almost 300 hours of work in a show drive on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring . In June 2014 it was used at the Norisring Race Classics - with Pirelli tires of the latest generation at the time, which ultimately gave the car the long-sought, improved grip. For 2018, Feucht plans to return to active motorsport with the use of the Ford Mustang in the Touring Car Classics .
