2017 season>

The 2016 DTM season was the 30th DTM season and the 17th since the series was re-established in 2000. The season began on May 7th in Hockenheim and ended on October 16th at the same point.

Regulations

In order to compensate for the speed disadvantages that BMW had in the previous season with the same weight as the competition, the minimum weight for the BMW M4 DTM was reduced by 7.5 kg, and the rear wing of the car can be 50 mm wider than the competition.

The rules for using the Drag Reduction System (DRS) were changed, the DRS could now be used from the second lap in the race if the distance to the driver ahead at the finish line was less than a second. Depending on the length of the route, there is a fixed number of uses; when using the DRS, three uses are always deducted. The DRS can then be activated two more times in the same round without this being deducted from the remaining number.

The assignment of performance weights has also been revised. These are no longer awarded before the race weekend, but after qualification. The theoretical fastest lap time (based on the three fastest sector times) of the fastest driver of a manufacturer is decisive for the weight in the race. If the fastest driver from another manufacturer was more than 0.1 percent slower, the faster manufacturer must place 2.5 kg performance weight in each of its vehicles, the slower manufacturer may take 2.5 kg performance weight. If the difference is more than 0.2 percent, it is even 5 kg in each case.

Performance weights

Based on the basic weight of 1120 kg, performance weights were loaded or unloaded during the season. The initial weight at the beginning of the season at BMW was reduced by 7.5 kg due to the performance in the previous season. Over the season, the BMW M4 DTM was the lightest car with an average performance weight of -3.8 kg (min: -12.5 kg; max: +2.5 kg). The heaviest vehicle was the Mercedes-AMG C63 with an average performance weight of +1.8 kg (min: -10 kg; max: 15 kg). The Audi RS5 had an average performance weight of +0.7 kg (min: -10 kg; max: +7.5 kg). The maximum (+20 kg) and minimum (-15 kg / -22.5 kg) performance weights stipulated by the regulations were not achieved by any vehicle during the season.
